Re: boss ds-1s - good or crap?

the sd1 definitely has a good amount of low end cut and midrange boost, totally different from a ts though. the tubescreamer is much more high-mid oriented imho, and doesn't cut as much bass. the sd1 also has a smoother high end

if you meant SD-1 (the overrive pedal, not the distortion) instead of DS-1 then the SD-1 is not crap. Its a great pedal to slam the front end lower gain tube amps like 2204/2204'a etc. I got mine in 82 and it still works perfectly althought ti doesn't get much use these days.

I prefer the SD-1 to the DS-1 too, it gives a little more punch to your drive channel of your amp and kinda gives you a 3-channel thing. The DS-1 I don't think much of, nor the MXR Distortion +. Rhoads made it sound a lot better than it was because of his playing, but his actual tone is kinda sucky with it.

My favorite distortion is the ART Xtreme. It has a thrash-type distortion, a TS-type, and a retro fuzz type. It has pre and post gains and a 3-band EQ. It also has some halfway decent digital effects settings. You can't mod them at all but they all sound pretty cool except the pitch shifts, and with separate footswitches for distortion and effects you don't accidentally call up a distortion patch when you want a clean one (unless you can't tell left from right). You do have to bend down to select the effect patch you want on the rotary switch, but used as a distortion alone it's easy to use. Get 'em on Ebay for about $50. ART doesn't make them anymore but will service them.

buy cheap gear, get crap results. not always, but i often find this sort of gear is very limited in use. i've owned the original orange ds-1 and a flanger boss pedal. they sound poor and hungry for battery power. i have a boss gt-8 and gt-6. i'm selling the gt-6.

Well, all I know is that I didn't know the DS-1 was a piece of shit until I got on the Internet.

It's funny, back in the 80's I had no money so my rig back then was a Rhoads, Carvin X100B, Power Soak, DS-1, Boss analog chorus, Boss analog delay, and a Boss volume pedal. I used to envy the guys with the rack 'o doom. Once my band started gigging I was embarassed at first because of my meager rig. The funny thing is those same guys with the mega racks would come up to me at gigs and ask me where the rest of my rig was and they'd complement me on my sound. Go figure.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.
