• POD XT live.. what am I getting myself into?

I just got off the phone with Matt from Matt's music. The POD XT Live should be here sometime next week. I am really excited for it! I am hoping it will be the last amp I will ever have to buy.

My question for all you XT Live tone gurus is what are some good ways, without the metal pack, to tweak the unit to get the best metal sounds possible out of it? I may only have an hour or two to dial up a good tone before rehersal, and I am wondering if you guys can give me some hints as to what I can do to get a good metal tone from it?

    Thanks,

    Zach

ask someone who has one.. to send u some tones.. I got afew good ones, also found one off the line6 monkey that was great, just tweaked it for like 30 mins and its amazing now.. was a Marty Friedman solo tone, i just added abit of delay, and messed with the EQ and now its amazing for solos.. its simple to use

I would start messing with the JCM 800 first, but only because I loved that one. I think I used it with the EQ and a tubscreamer and got some kickass tones. It's much easier to edit things on the PC with Line6Edit or Guitarport because the options are right in front of you, but it's very workable editing on the fly. Good luck bro

I love it for recording, live, it's a piece of shit.

Until someone sends me some REAL PATCHES they use LIVE, and not just me sorting through 50K patches some fat lazy douche bag made in his bedroom and uploaded onto line6s website, I've got this opinion.

I'm sure it's great, but I've got about 0 patience. I found a few good tones for recording, and that's it. Live, I'll use Papa, and Baby boogie.

just start with the presets and tweak from there. the model you use depends on what kind of sound you want to have. if its coming out too shrill, try turning the presence down on the power amp.

i feel the opposite as deneb. i think the 2.0 sounds better direct and the XTL sounds better live through a tube power amp.

I've never tried the 2.0 direct, or live, so I'm not quite sure. I've only tried the XTL live, and recorded.

Re: POD XT live.. what am I getting myself into?

i've had my best luck, using a tube power amp and setting the speaker emulation to the type of cab i was actually using.

some of the line 6 originals are pretty good too.

i caved and bought the metal model pack and pretty much wasted 50 bucks. there are plenty of good tones that come standard in the XTL.

if you are using a SS power amp you will not be as happy as with a tube power amp.

and remember to tweak for the volume you'll be playing at. it is very volume sensitive.

I'd have to agree with Dreamland Rebel about the Metal Pack. I liked the "Spinal Puppet" amp best, bought the Metal Pack with visions of Bogners and Diezels dancing in my head - and still like the Spinal Puppet amp best. Oh well, at least I'm happy with the sounds I'm getting.

Incidentally, the XTL will also allow you to get the RiffTracker software if you want to start recording with some ultra-simple software. I had never really recorded before and recently got it, and I think it's great. Best $99 I've spent on guitars in a long time.

Re: POD XT live.. what am I getting myself into?

I have a couple of guitar recording programs. I use cakewalk and audacity. They both work pretty well. I will be running the XT into a Powerblock and then to the cab. It sounds like I will have to start with the preset patches and work from there using many of the same principles that I used to tweak a flextone or a pod. There are a lot of cab models and effects that can go into making a good tone. I read that there is also a mic placement option with 4 different parameters to mess around with.

                  Any other ideas?

mic emulation only works in "studio direct" mode. you'll want your output set to "stack poweramp". but i must warn you, it will sound a bit thin with a SS poweramp. a bit "ice-pick"y. you will really have to be carefull with the presence knob. it will sound so much fuller with tube power section. and you can fully utilize it's eq controls.

I found this site from the Line 6 Forum...

                      http://www.instituteofnoise.com/L6/filesearch.asp

After a while of getting used to the controls, I am assuming this would be a good resource. My question is what software do I need to download and open these files, and how would I tie that back to my xt? Do I just connect it to my pc with a usb cable and follow the on screen instructions or something?

most likely, line6 edit, guitar port, or tonemonkey, which are free downloads from line6.

but i would concentrate more on making your own patches that work in a band setting for Your band. everything always sounds different when its just you jamming by yourself. once the guys come in and start playing your personal setting usually go out the window. and you have to re-tweak to cut through or settle back down into the mix.

I own the XT Live. It's cool if you are running out to jam and you don't feel like moving your heavy gear. For me, the tone is just so sterile. Does not compare to warm tube tone! It gives you versatility but I've grown tired of the digital tone.

i don't know. i've got mine pretty hot and screaming. but then again i like clarity especially with a 2 guitar band. if you like a slightly muddy sound. then yes the digital mud is steril and not fun to listen to or play.

it is very dependant on its power amp. so far i've had the best luck with el-84 based power. warms it up real nice.

I will see what it sounds like through the Powerblock. I am pretty sure I should be able to dial up any tone I would need using the XT, so I should never really need to get rid of that. The powerblock, from what I have been told, is pretty transparent. All it will really do is power the XT.

Ifraan- if you read this, what where your settings on the powerblock when you used this rig? I am assuming you just plugged it into the back of the PB and that was pretty much it right?
