• Marshall JMP-1

Hey guys. I've recently been interested in Pre-amps and power amps. I've heard a JMP-1 being used once before, but the tone used was a more classic rock/prog sound. Question is, how much gain does it come with? is it equal to a JCM800/900 or can it have more gain than those amps?

Another question is, do you guys think it would work well with a 7 string guitar for death metal like sounds? i've never heard of a death metal band use a JMP-1 so i really don't know. If it sounds stupid, is there any pre-amp that you would suggest?

dude, it has WAY more gain than any jcm800 or 900. i own a jcm800 2210 which is supposed to be the highest gain jcm800, and when cranking both the preamp volume and gain (the volume also adds gain) it has about as much gain as the jmp1 on OD1 (the lower gain mode) at around 16 out of 20 i guess. i know for sure that my main rhythm tone on the jcm800 is with volume 8 gain 8,5, and the jmp1 has this much gain on OD at 11/20, so go figure. OD2 has about as much gain as the tsl lead channel i think....maybe even more

as for downtuned death metal stuff....mmmh, good question. i know it SHINES when used for thrash/speed metal. iirc, the danish death/thrash band hatesphere (check them out if you don't know them!) is using the jmp1 + some mesa poweramp (i think....could also be a marshall poweramp) for live shows. they never recorded with this setup afaik, though. they're tuned to C btw, and the jmp handles it quite well.

the poweramp also plays a big role...i'm using it with an EL34 100:100, and switching the voicing from modern to vintage instantly cuts the brutality like 50%. i guess it would really go well with a mesa 2:90

other than that.....the search function is your friend

Thanks for that mate. I've seen Hatesphere live and i love them! i didn't know they used the JMP-1 though. Their live sound is great. If i was to get one i'd probably go with a Marshall Poweramp.

feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any further questions. i've never used the jmp1 / 100:100 setup live (my lead guitar player did, though), but it's been my rehearsal setup for quite some time, and therefore had to stand up against e.g. a jcm800, a mesa DC5, an engl blackmore, a marshall TSL, a marshall DSL, etc

Man, have to say I hate both the JMP-1 and the EL34 100/100. I could see some liking the JMP-1, although I think they are pretty so-so sounding. I truly know there are better preamps out there for less money these days.

But, I have owned them both though for years and put them through the wringer. And the EL34 100/100 was in the shop so many times it was ridiculous. Was ok till I started gigging with it and it did not take being out live well. Lotsa issues from being carted around. Cold solder joints everywhere. Seriously sub standard unit. I'd really have to sway you away from that thing.

Got a VHT power amp and never a problem.

of course, a VHT would be of much higher quality than any marshall power amp. having that said, the jmp1/el34 rack never caused any problems whatsoever. my lead guitar player used to play out with this rack for around 2 years i think, and it never broke down. afaik it still hast the stock tubes, too

I used a JMP-1 with a mesa simul clss 2:90 and it worked pretty damn good. the rack was heavier than a son of a bitch but it sounded pretty good if you like the marshall sound. Mick Thompson from slipknot bought it off me and used it on the first slipknot disc a bit and quite a bit of the first ozzfest tour they did. It has plenty of gain. I think he used a vht poweramp with it.

Re: Marshall JMP-1

Three techs from three different places I talked to cringe when the Marshall rack amps come through the door. Hard to work on and fail a lot. Cheap components and low end assembly for what they cost.

A Peavey 50/50 or 120/120 is a MUCH better choice, much better made and MUCH cheaper.

also you can get a used mesa 50/50 cheap these days, for under 500 dollars. You would probaly do better going with an amp that has 6L6's anyway for detuned metal.

Re: Marshall JMP-1

aye, agree with some of what's been said, but UK prices are way off the US, so there isn't really any alternative to the JMP-1 that I could suggest. (I know Cleveland Metal has a crusade against marshall rack gear, but that's fine if you live in the US and can buy a mesa pre for something less than 10x the price of a jmp-1! heheh). I've heard the ADA MP-1 is similar but I'd be wary of buying something that's discontinued, whereas the jmp-1 is still a fairly popular pre amp.
I use a jmp-1 with a vht power amp and it's the dog's bollocks. I used to use the marshall el34 50/50 but I'd also advise getting something else for the reliability issues mentioned. You might be able to pick up a 2nd hand mesa or vht power amp somewhere for about £450-£550 if you're really lucky (got mine for £500 but they're usually at least £700). JMP-1 should be able to get one for about £200 2nd hand. I'd also advise getting a rack eq as it lets you get heavier sounds from the jmp-1,
cheers

havnt got one but have mates who use them, and they sound killer.I intend to get one next year as i could use the tones.I have had marshall gear over the years and found their heads/cabs to be very well made, perhaps cleveland metal has been fucking unlucky in getting bad stuff?

to be fair, the build quality of the marshall rack power amps is far below that of something like a vht or a mesa, but i don't see this as a problem with the jmp-1, which seems fairly robust, especially for the price...

When you can buy an ENGL preamp and a Peavey 120/120 for MUCH less than a Marshall rack setup and sound better, have less reliability issues, (not as pretty and all lit up gold and shiny though)I guess you can call it a crusade.... to save people from wasting money, hahaha.

Even my JMP-1 ended up back at marshall and their service dept was a joke.

And of course, its distortion is so outdated it's funny. Very 80s sounding at this point. It's basically a MIDI controlled rack mounted Overdrive pedal with an effects loop. Although the idea is actually cool, it is limited in tonal ability. There is certainly nothing special there.

And the new price is a laughable $600+ dollars here.Used they are hitting $400. That is silly. You can get a new ENGL for $479 new that will wal;k all over the JMP-1
