so who's actually using outboard equalizers?

i wonder how many of you guys use outboard EQs such as the boss ge-7?
and to those who use them.....do you leave them on all the time, or just for the rhythm/lead sound, or whatever?

i used to believe that a good rhythm sound (as that's usually the most used sound) should come straight from the amp without any fx except maybe an OD in front, and external EQs should only be used for leads, cleans or volume boosts. but then again, for example the old mesa mark series heads are usually used for rhythm with the EQ engaged, switching off the EQ for leads, so i wonder if that's also common with external EQs?

I have a GE-7 that I used to use along with an SD-1 with my 2203. I never left it on all the time and only used it to tweak the tone a little when the SD-1 was on for solos. I had a HotMod in that amp so I haven't used the pedals with it for a long time. I just removed that HotMod the other day and put it back to stock so I may have to fire up the trusty ole pedal board [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

i use an ibanez PQ9 parametric EQ pedal. i put it in front of the amp and use it as "lead enhancer". i use 2 channel rivera amps, so i use the PQ9 like a third channel. it boosts the gain a little and changes the tone for leads.

I use a Rane SP-15 Parametric EQ and it is on all the time.

I have been using a GE-7 for years now. I use it for that extra boost to overdrive the tubes.

I use the ge-7. in the front of the amp and only for leads. mainly a volume boost but to also hit the lead sound i want as well.

I use an ART Tube EQ parametric in front of the amp. I originally was going to put it in the effects loop or use it with an A/B/Y pedal for leads, but since I play 90% of the leads in my band anyway, I just left it where it was, always on. I currently run it after a distortion pedal on my single-channel (clean) tube amps, but have found that it gives my old Peavey VTM's distortion the extra push it needs for getting high gain without a pedal.

If I was going to use a pedal, I'd probably get a Boss EQ-20.

I had a Boss GE-7 and mine did have alot of hiss, but so does my Boss MT-2 pedal. I use alot of gain though, maybe I nead a Noise Suupressor? Jack.

the GE7 definitely adds some noise when boosting either the level or certain frequencies. unfortunately it doesn't take away any hiss when cutting freqs [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]
so yes, the ge7 surely isn't a particulary noise-free unit

I use external EQ primarily to shape the overall tone coming from the preamp/amp. While 10 people can play through the same guitar->amp rig and get 10 different tones, not every amp's initial tone suits every player - some players sound like crap tone-wise through one amp but great through another.
And then there's people like me that just haven't found the motivation to buy every amp known to man and try them out, or don't have access to a store full of various amps to try them out.

So I take what amp I have available and use an EQ to make it sound like I want it to sound.

I use an MXR-6 band to get a more ballsy evil sound, when my JCM 800 style pre-amp leaves me in the 80's.

I used to use a Boss Parametric EQ pedal, but it's better suited for country.
