• Got a nice, cheap, great-sounding Marshall!

Hey all-

As you may recall, I thought my buddy had what was going to be a great jcm800 all-tube 1x12 combo, but it turned out not to be.

So I started trying out some different models by Marshall and other amps, and even considered another dsl401 (but was too traumatised over my lemon of a 401 I originaly had ).

I finaly tried out an AVT50, the 'hybrid' Marshall, and was really impressed with the heavy, clean, and classic rock overdrive tones I was getting out of it, it has pretty much everything I want right now: excellent value, smallish size, and sounds great at bedroom levels without cranking it while still being loud enough to practice/jam or play small gigs with.

I found one on ebay and won it at 200 bucks, 260 shipped to my door.

No it isn't the exact same tone I was able to get from the dsl401 when I cranked the hell out of it (and when it decided to work ) but it is very close and it will definitely hold me over until I need to upgrade to a bigger amp, or until i have the dough to blow on a $1k+ all tube setup

Not huge news, but it's made my Chirtmas a rockin one this year

Thanks again for all the opinions and suggestions and help when i asked for it before! And have a merry Christmas everyone! (happy holidays)

congrats! i briefly played both the avt50 and avt150, and the 50 sounded a lot better than the 150 for some reason.

Congrats!
I got one of these four years ago (I paid much more than you). I use it as a bedroom practice amp. Decent sound at very low volume.

My main gripe with it is that after a while the clean channel started to "flicker", kinda halfway switching to the dirty.

Replacing the footswitch did help for a while, but the problem occured again eventually. Well, in the bedroom I can live with that.

However when I started my first band I needed something bigger, for rehearsal it was not loud enough and one day it broke down while being pushed very hard.
Got it repaired under warranty.

Since then it worked fine. At bedroom levels, that is.

One tip: If your amp starts to sound like ass after two years or so, replace the preamp tube.

Hey thanks guys. I will definitely keep a look-out for that issue, sounds like a crappy issue! Yeah for now it sounds great, as long as it lasts a few years, I'll be happy... basicaly just a bedroom/garage amp

I like how I'm still awake in the USA when it's nearly lunchtime in Germany. I'm a damn insomniac

I am really enjoying the clean channel on this amp!

It's so simple, it's got a volume, gain, and bass and treble controls. And the tone is spot-on with a cranked tube-powered Marshall!

Sure, it doesn't have an adjustable mid setting, but the pre-set mid scoop is just fine to my ears.

I need to find out which jcm-series head has these simple controls, cause that'll be the one I will get

I agree, the 50 sounded better than the 150.

I think you did good, it's a really good amp, and the AVT series is really under rated.

Thanks! Yeah 2x12 could be cool. I don't think they made the 50-watt in 2x12 though.... could be wrong

Congrats! I was looking at the AVT50 a while back, but it went from $349 at MF to around $500 in a short time. They must be pretty good....
