Re: Why 12\" Speakers?

When I was in college, an old guy who lived down the street who had a reconing shop. His prices were cheap and he'd make guitar speakers for me. He made me 2 15's I mounted in a crappy cab. My cab didn't hit as hard as a 4 X 12. I was bummed. So I asked him and he said, "It's all about how much air your throwing."

My 2 x 15 tight guitar speakers were 30" total. A 4 x 12 = (gotta make this somewhat fun)
So you get the picture. BUT, a couple 15's with more give, add to the throw. I can see 2 x 15 bass speakers in a guitar cab killing a 4 x 12 in lows. Anyone have a slide ruler?

bigger speakers can move more air, but need more power to do so. Hence, swapping out your 4x12" for a 2x15" or whatever, won't necessarily mean instant succsess unless you'd add more power too!

like Rupe mentioned, if you'd use a 18" with a conventional amp...it will sound "slow" and "behind", and not very responsive. So stack up on power amps and let the bass solo rip

I'm a fan of smaller speakers just because of their accuracy. Of course to move more air, you need more of 'em!
I think the ultimate guitar cab would have an array of 4" drivers, kinda like the Bose 901's.

10s work great as well. I have Marshall Micro Stacks and love the tone. I won't go below 10s - anything smaller sounds like shit.

my Dean Markley practice amp resembles that remark!

10's IMO have a much more even and tighter response across the cone. 12's are reputed to begin vibrating inconsistantly on the outside of the cone, but given the extra diameter, will offer more low end response.
