DR Makes a very, very good point. Not too much distortion, but run a Sansamp pedal infront of the amp for some dirt.

hey whatever works for you I guess..

But I been there did it twice and have the T-shirts to proove..

      5150 + 1960a/b celestion cabs = flabby Ass

      5150 + 5150 cab + 422 in the loop = cool..

I stand by that with my balls hanging out in front of Jesus on Judgement Day!

ok thanks so far for the great answers. i don't have a lot of time right now, so i'll keep it short.

had a band rehearsal yesterday, and swapped out the JJs for EH in v1. problem solved. lead channel all straight up except for gain and resonance which were around 10 o'clock, no further adjustments needed, except for the master being way up. ditched the tubescreamer, gave me too much feedback in the small space even when it's barely on, plus it's not needed anymore.

one thing that remains VERY clear is that with ANY Celestion cab I couldn't get the Gain past 5-6 without it starting to flub and mush out..

with the 5150 shefield cab I was FINALY able to kick the gain to a VERY crisp and crunchy 7...which is a huge difference from 5-6.

I've owned FIVE 5150's heads ..block and script logo (no differnce there) ..and umpteen 4-12" various Celestion cabs thru the years...too many to count.

A recto needs to be played thru a recto cab

and even more so a 5150 needs a 5150 cab..this is my confirmation!

anyone to argue this point prooves to me that you are completely tone deaf.

well, then i have to assume that andy sneap is tone deaf

and btw, i can't see how anyone could possible need to run the gain THAT high, especially loud. i was using a tone zone loaded guitar, and had the gain at 3, without any outboard boost, and it was plenty for rhythm - gotta kick in a boost for leads, though. the only time i have the gain set at 5 is when playing at bedroom volume

I might be getting a 5150 soon, and I also really want something close to In Flames's "Clayman" album tone, so I hope I won't run into too much trouble like you.

Believe me Fragle running it on 7 with the BBE and shefeilds..it was TIGHT, focused and very useable..great sustaining "singing" lead tones..which I find somewhat dead sounding if not pushed a smidge past 6...tighter rythms but not enough oopmh for solos set at aprox 5....with the shefilds I was able to take more advantage of the resonance as well...it had a tighter bottom than I got with my Recto..sitting right next to it..great swedish thrash tone!

I switched between them with a splitter box I had made to run 5 different half stacks.. Ampeg Lee Jackson / 5150 / Recto / 2210 Marshall / Soldano HR 100..then a Mesa Mrk III.

Don't take the BBE hype too seriously, Fragle . I've tried the 422a with my 5150, and it basically does what the tubescreamer does, in a much less natural way.

Umm...I respectfully and strongly disagree with a neatly shaven beanbag exposed in good faith sir..Well I never used a Tube screamer with a 5150...I did try it once...once...but it has more than enough gain already..

A TS9 / or whatever tube screamer overdrive unit..what does that have to do with a Barcus Barry Sonic Maximizer in the loop of a 5150..??

That's not even apples to oranges dude...that's like apples to ummm..eggplants or something..

BTW I use one of my Marshall 1960B cabs with my Uber..

I get a great sound..I been told many times that the Uber sounds MUCH better with a Uberkab..I'm sure they are right..

I would have to take their word on it since they owned and used both and I never had one at my disposal..I'm sure I would agree and own one.

                      maybe eventualy..

Oh...The BBE sounds like complete ass with the Uber...they work great with certain amps..especially 5150s.

Set a tubescreamer up with the level high, gain low, and tone at 11-12 o clock, bump the gain down to 4 on the amp, and you'll see what I mean. There's a reason Andy Sneap, James Murphy, Neil Kernon, etc, use this technique...

It focus's the tone, makes it cleaner, clearer, more defined, and more cutting. Is this not what BBE's are supposed to do? That's what mine did. Until you try the TS trick though, you can't say anything about it. It wouldn't make sense normally, but it's not a gain issue, in this case.

Don't get me wrong, the BBE can improve an amps tone, but I feel the Tubescreamer does it much more nicely.

Also, BBE's tend to ruin mic'd guitar tones, IMO.

Re: the 5150 and *that* swedish metal tone...

I've ran overdrive units in the front before..including Boss SD1s and DS-1 and a TS9..they did seem to compress and roll off the highs and lows to my ears..

I did run the gain on the amp much lower and used the stomp for a lead boost..well I guess it does a bit what you explained..

It didn't leave a big impression on me I suppose..

I findd the tone more organic and pure by going all amp..I milked it until I didn't have a need for any stomp..

what my point is about the shefield VS celestion with the 5150..is that I was able to crank the lows and gain much higher and it remained focused without the breakup I got with any celestion cab I used..I'm sure the design of that cab is tuned to that head as well.

this maybe the case with the Uberkab..and recto cab as well..

Rectos sound MUCH better with a recto cab..I've tried them with various Marshall cabs loaded with John's 25s, Vintage 3o , 70's and the stock 75s in a 1960 cab and sounded terrible...they sound much better with their respective cabs IMO.

I've have seen many players run overdrives sometimes two..especially Maxons in front of some expensive high gain amps lately..wondering WTF..

In other words, it takes mean and pissed off sounding amp and makes it sound meaner and more pissed off . It makes it tighter also. I usually boost my recto with a Maxon OD9 but I just started playing around with boosting my 5150 and god damn it sounds good.

Bill - the thing with the bass rolled off is rather well known - there are even mods for a ts so it can be stopped from robbing your bottom end.

and about bbe - have to try it with other amps because with mine it always made the sound more scooped - too bad - the bottom was really punishing but the highs and mids sucked after engaging the loop

and with the 5150 with 5150 cab - maybe just that 401 we tried because i've heard nothing but raving about 5150 and bbe's (esp. 422/422a) but then it was like that : alone the guitar sounded a lil'bit more hifi but it was lost in the mix a little - maybe that dumbass haven't boosted the mids after engaging the bbe
