Well, the "new" unchained and Panama is pretty cool sounding, very very close. Some of the other stuff isn't all that, Jamie's crying is weak.

On the other hand... The 70s Marshal super lead sound classic brown too. Just as much, just a bit 'different character.

This guy just has that in his hands. It's a lot of technique duplication. Guy can play.

The key is using the lead channel but rolling back the

Yep.. thats the brown sound. Alot of that tone is coming from the fingers but I will admit he has his 5150 dialed in with the correct amount of outboard processing for the VH brown sound. It really doesn't need to get much closer than what he is getting. Thanks for the link!!

here are his settings.
Lead Pre - 5 1/2
Bass - 5 1/2
Mid - just a hair before 4,
High - 0 1/2,
Resonance - 5 1/2,
Presence - hair above 8.
Post gain -4
High gain input, SD59 PU,
Marshall 4x12 straight cab with greenback reissues.
the only thing I changed was Presence down to 4 1/2
High up to 4. gives you basically the same sound.
Now when I use these setting with my GMW I get real close (Duncan Custom)
but when I use my soloist..............not even, so the guitar and the pickup make a difference.

the 5150 should suit you fine. it's quite tight, although nowhere close to ENGL or VHT, but then again even with the super low stock bias it sounds twice as organic as one of these ENGL POS amps...imho.
i found the 5150 to work best with EMGs, although passives are also very well usable.
use the high gain input, the low gain isn't of any use as the noise level is the same as when using the high input, therefore running the gain low using the hi is a lot quieter.
be sure to crank the amp right up....don't stop at ~3, go turn it up to 4 or above, it'll come alive.
you might now be convinced when you play it, because tubes make a LARGE difference. my 5150 didn't sound half as good with the old tubes.
as for settings...using hi gain pickups, turn the gain to around 3-4 MAX (for rhythm anyways), up the bass a little and get the resonance down to around 2-4. should work just fine depending on the tubes.

Come to think of it, it was actually the Single Recto that I played with the PRS. That fuckin' killed.

I was playing with some guys and they had a DR. I'm not sure exactly how it was done, but I convinced them to use the Marshall MG halfstack and let me do the work on the DR. (How the fuck does that happen???) Anyway, maybe the amp wasn't up to its full potential. It was plugged into a marshall cab (looked like a vintage 30 loaded cab) and it just didn't sound good at all. It was in a corner, so I'm sure that had plenty to do with it. It was just so very fucking noisy. I had it cranked up pretty high, and it hissed like a motherfucker. The bass was so boomy and farty I couldn't stand it. I had to roll it back a ton so that I could get through the mix. When I put the bass back up it was like I was getting louder but not cutting through still. It wasn't a very big room, maybe that had even more to do with it. Even for those factors though, I thought it was pretty bad. I wasn't expecting a miracle with such crappy acoustics, but the MG was keeping up just fine. Now that sucks.

The clean channel was especially terrible. I like a pristinely clean channel, no dirt at all. The SR was great for that, I think better than the F series. A huge reason why I'm thinking of going 5150 is because everyone said that it was too noisy and the clean channel sucked donkey testies. That's exactly what I experienced with the DR anyway! So why not save a couple hundred bucks?

DR-s clean isn't anything fantastic but it is times better than the 5150's clean wich sucks ass.

+1 - 5150 cleans really suck

Definitely roll the gain back, that's how you get a better sound on the 5150. Oh, and the block letter model and signature model are both the same, so don't let someone tell you that the block one is better. Also, do a google on the Wolfgang Registry, which has a bunch of user settings to try out. Good luck!

Use a THD hotplate with it. I use a Marshall SE100, similar to a hotplate. Used BBE Maximizer, and the Hotplate, then I got a nice raunchy tone. Anywhere from 80's hair metal, to deathmetal especially when really using the BBE.

Nothing tighter than a VHT Pittbull CLX-100, super tight, best speed metal amp on the planet, but not super versitile since it is very tight, but super tight and super loud and aggressive. Jack.

The 5150 clean does suck stock. By getting it modded, the clean channel gets a fair share better as a by product.

The block letter 5150 is better only for one reason. Resale value.
I think the 5150 clean channel is totally useable unless you are looking for a Fender or JC120 type clean.
