• Dual Rec with a Marshall cabinet??

Some friends of mine moved into our practice space and today for kicks I plugged my Dual Rectifier head into a Marshall 1960B cabinet that they have...I was amazed at how much smoother and less harsh it sounded! Has anyone ever compared the Mesa Standard, Marshall 1960A and maybe the 1960AV cabinets?

Actually yes. It didn't jive with me at all. To each his own though. No offense meant.

I have. I used to think you had to match the head and the cab, for the "best sound quality". Bullocks to that.

I run, well better yet, I'll let the pictures talk.

I don't have the Marshall 2210 pictured (a few people have owned it here on the boards) and still wish I did, but hey, what the hell.

The current set up is, those 1960 cabs, with the G1275ts, and the triple rec (3 channel). I also use the Boogie MK 2C (eq and simul class, it's 1983).

I don't like the Mesa cabs. Now mind you, my Marshall cabs, are the NON pressboard or whatever shit they do now (I don't know, I heard someone talking about it).

I've used the whole gamut of Mesa cabs (went to a Mesa dealer, and plugged into every one, inluding 1x12s and 2x12s.)

On a side note, the 1x12 didn't have the fullness or body that a 4x12 had, but it sounded neat...not neat enough to gig with, but it was fun.

Basically, use whatever cab sounds good with your head, don't worry about the brand.

Marshall Cabs > Mesa Cabs in all walks of life, IMO. The Mesa's, even with the same speakers, make amps sound dark and shrill at the same time, and have too much of their own voice that they lend to the amp.

I respectfully and strongly disagree there Box...I bought one of the first series of Dual Rectos back in 91/92..I had NOTHING but Marshall cabs 5 or 6 of them..w/ various speaker combinations...and NONE of them sounded good with my Recto...except the Recto Cab..

Ummm..John can DEFINITELY vouch for that.. he was there for every moment of my frustration doing just this..I played it thru his Marshall cabs too.

I say the same thing in c/w the 5150...it needs the matching cab!

I thought it was very flabby and unfocused to mine and John's ears..BUT...BUT ..BUT...if you like it and it works for you...and you can play fine with it...go for it...that's all that matters really.

I thought my racktifier and single recto kicked ass with a 1960 slant cab (celestion G75s... some people hate those, I love em!)

When I had an early reverse chassis dual, my cab at the time was a 5150. I thought it sounded pretty good, but didn't have the marshall cab at the time.

Re: Dual Rec with a Marshall cabinet??

After I bought the Recto..I discovered that I didn't like it eopugh when compared to my other amps to invest in a Recto Cab at that time..

So I traded it off for a Soldano HR 100..now that sounded fine thru a Marsahll 1960 GT75 cab IMO.

Like I said in another thread..all this silly bickering and debating over what sounds good...to me these are just tools to get your musical ideas to materialize..whatever works for you to play your best..no matter what it is..as long as the final product kicks ass ..I don't give a flying rats ass what kind of amp was used.

I >>HATE<< Rectos (they don't cooperate with me) ..but my favorite metal shredder Jeff Loomis never sounded better when he toured with his...so I don't have shit to say really!!

Re: Dual Rec with a Marshall cabinet??

different year recto's also sound different, so that depends too, i can understand why horns didnt like the 92/93 recto, in my opinion they did not sound as good as the modern 3 channel recto's. Same with the rack mounts, i had a 92 rackmount and i have had a late 90's rackmount and i liked the late 90's one alot better.

As to cabs, i am on the fence with this one, sometimes i like my 1984 marshall with the 75's and sometimes i like my bogner uber cab better, for some reason the v30's in the uber overpower the 75's but at the same time you are still getting the highs from the 75's.

All in all depending on style of music, the way you EQ and amp and many things will depend on which cab you use. Hell look at lynch, he used greenbacks and 30watters in his cabs in the dokken days when most everyone else was using 75's from that era and to me he had one of the best tones.

Thanks for your input Bill, I used to be along a similar mentality, thinking that the manufacturer must have designed the cab based on the head, so it must sound best together right? But lets also keep in mind that you and I most likely have real different sounds that we go for...the sound I go for is a more heavy rock (think Foo Fighters on Colour and the Shape) rather than metal sound. I like something meaty that cuts without my leads sounding too shrill.

Re: Dual Rec with a Marshall cabinet??

Well I sure love the look of a Marshall cab...it's so fuggin' classic...it's so metal...I'm looking at five right now...four 1960b cabs with my stereo Marshall rack..sounds great..me still likes it very much!

and one 1960A with my Uber..I would love to demo and buy an Uberkab..it would look bad ass with the Bogner head.

Box ever play a Uber ..you really get a meaty sound from these things...too bad they cost an arm and leg..they can cover both sonic territory from the Foo Fighters to..well Arch Enemy...even a good AC/DC.

I got my Uber for 2k...I think I seen then go for a smidge less..I guess that's not too bad considering what other amps cost new..and a soon it leaves the music store...well it's used...right?

In my travels I have found that:
Marshall amp + Marshall cab = great
Marshall amp + Mesa cab = NOT great
Mesa amp + Marshall cab = great
Mesa amp + Mesa cab = great

I have yet to find a better sounding cab for my rig than my Marshall loaded with v30's. I A/B'ed it with both my Mesa halfback 4x12 and a Marshall with GT75's. The v30's were louder even at lower power levels and cut through the mix much better than the other cabs. Now I just need three more of them!!!

My current cab is an Orange, with x-patterned v30s and g12h30s; it sounds HUGE. maybe it doesn't look super 'metal', but it's definetely got it where it counts. only downside is it's a bitch to move.
