• Rocktron Preamps??

Hey..question for the amp gurus of the forum.

Would you recommend Rocktron preamps?? If so, why?? If not, why??

    What model of preamp??

I'm looking for a versatile, good sounding, MIDI capable preamp that can cover a range of tones (Fenderish, Marshally, Boogie, great lead sound (sustain) etc.

I'm not too worried about "in the box" effects...I have that covered...

    What are your thoughts, opinions??

What other recommendations are out there??

    Thanks.

    Re: Rocktron Preamps??

Check out the Piranha, if you can find one. Especially if you have effects covered (since it's just a preamp.)

It does Boogie tones really well, and a reasonable approximation of Marshall tones. But it has a voice of its own really.

UNFORTUNATELY the clean tones blow. At least I can't seem to get mine to work well for cleans. Someone suggested I plug in a 12at7 for one of the 12ax7's, so I'm gonna try that at some point, but I'm not too optimistic.

All Rocktron pre stuff that I heard had a different personality and voicing than Marshalls or Boogies etc. If you look for those sounds, it is better to get JMP-1, or Formula, or something that does have this sound. I like the prophecy for instalnce for what it can do, while sound differently. Just my2c.

I never owned a JMP1 but if it sounds anything like the JMP1 patch on my Vetta it kills. Thats some serious high gain Marshall tones!

I was quite impressed with the Rocktron Voodu valve distortion tone when paired with the Mesa 50/50 poweramp, enough so that I sold my Digitech 2120 whose effects I really didnt't take advantage of. The voodu's got some usable effects in there as well.

It's getting a clear bell clean tone with the low gain channel is the stickler though, even with the stock JAN GE 5751 preamp tube that has about a 30% lower gain than a 12AX7. ...still has loads of gain in there. So maybe even a lower gain preamp tube would be better.

Voodu is the same is Prophecy (or vice versa), Prophecy has better control panel, and 2x DSP power. Same sound, same feel.
