• Why does SS fart when cranked?

Am I the only one hear that has never been able to turn the master volume on the SS amp up to ten? Any Peavey SS amp I've tried couldn't handle past half volume. It was pretty loud, and thankfully I didn't need to go louder, but it was getting pretty farty. My Spider II stays okay when cranked up past half, kinda shitty but it handles itself. The main issue I think is the speakers on it. I've read quite a few people saying that they had to get the speakers replaced. What if I bought a 4X12 cab and hooked it up to this? (I own the 2X10 version BTW). Is there any harm to the amplifier section itself when cranking it?

Thanks for any replies.

some SS amps can get pretty nasty sounding when they get power section overdriven, but your description of 'farty' sounding sounds more like the speaker(s) just not being able to take it

SS amps suck when cranked, bottom line. Their power amp distortion is very unmusical, as opposed to the "good" sound you get when you crank a tube power amp to it's limits. That's why expensive SS amps have sooo much power, for the headroom. A 100W tube amp sounds best at full volume, where a 300W SS amp sounds best at around half volume usually.

yeah, SS poweramp clipping clips like ass, and not the good way, the farty way

this is true for all SS amps, including home stereo amps...the perceived loudness isn't higher from half volume to full volume, the sound just clips/distorts.

Okay then, so it's not just the speakers. That sucks. That means I could buy that 4X12 to protect the speakers (for as much as the fuckin' amp mind you) and still sound like shit.

Thanks for the replies.

Why are you trying to max out an SS amp anyway? The whole point of SS power sections is to ELIMINATE power amp distortion. Unfortunately, they seem to have lost sight of that through the years - trying to make them behave more like tube amps - rather than trying to build an amp that CAN go to 10 without distorting.

That's one thing I cannot grasp about more than just amps - if the knob says "10", why does performance suck or physical damage result when you leave it on 10? It either CAN go that high or it CANNOT. If it CANNOT, it doesn't need to be marked as such.
But then, if they marked knobs only up to 7 or 8, the same thing would happen - they'd only make it so it could only go to 4 or 5

Anyhoo, back on topic...

You'll need a tube power amp to do whatever you're trying to do, or a more powerful SS power amp to get the volume levels you're trying to get.

Its the same thing as speedometers on cars. Most of them have a top end # that is totally unsafe to be driving at.
Especially the older 80's US made cars. My buddy had a Gremlin X with a 304 in it that's speedo went to 120. Trust me.. you would NEVER want to be going 120 in a Gremlin with drum brakes and no handling.
