Played the G2 and bought an ENGL instead

That statement is the equivalent of saying:
I test drove a Ford Focus but I bought a BMW M5 instead.
You couldn't touch an Engl for the price of that Randall. They aren't even similar amps. Sometimes this place sucks for responses.
I only questioned what Mesa and Marshall amps he felt his Randall made sound like garbage.
If he is happy with his amp choice. Cool. Just don't bash Marshall and Mesa. I wonder if that Randall can kill an Ubershall? hmmm...

Haha if only it were that true :P The G2 I first tried in the shop for it was what i was looking for. It was priced at £400. I then noticed that the ENGL Thunder 50 Combo (not head like the G2) was on sale at £450 and tried that out. It sounded better and so I bought it ^.^

Mesa's and Marshalls can sound awful if you don't set your tone up right, and they are amps where you need to be a good guitarist to have a nice sound... They do not hide errors like SS amps ^.^

I didn't realize you were overseas. In the USA, Engl is very expensive. A nice Engl will run $1200.00-$1500.00 + US and that Randall is around $450.00 US.

Re: randalls done it again

Randalls good amps are the module amps, and of course they model Mesa and marshall and bogner amps and everyone elses amps. Solid state is great for a certain type of metal, downside you need a few stacks so they sound good live and you dont have to crank them, that was dime's trick. As to a amp that beats mesa and marshall, i doubt that, i am sure they sound good for a solid state amp, but in real life situation both mesa and marshall will eat them up.

Re: randalls done it again

Well, Randall HAS done it again, but not with the G2 stuff. They are re-vamping the G2 line to include the hybrid Mosfet power section that the new V2 and T2 amps will have. It will be renamed the G3 line because of this. I'm gonna get a chance to jam out on the V2 in a week or so, we'll see how good that power section makes it sound. And for anyone who has not tried that MTS modular switching system, it is by FAR the best amp I've ever had the pleasure of playing, and I've been lucky to play this amp 6 days a week for a couple of months instead of doing a 5 min demo in a store. It seems whenever I post on it no one gives a crap, but I can only say so much, it comes down to people playing them for themselves. But congrats on your amp, they do sound pretty good for what they are in that price range, you can't beat it.

Re: randalls done it again

im not bashing mesa and marshall. in perticular im really only bashing the gain and tone dextarity of the two amp giants. with the dual or triple rec. its a close call, but i honestly dont see the tremendous greatness in the marshall appeal. dont get me wrong for certain styles that include maas ammounts of mids than marshalls ur amp, cause generally those styles run a crunchy kind of gain structure. but marshalls are generally annemic in the gain. 'course im used to the buzz saw amount of gain typical of modern usa solid state. however i will bash these two marshalls, tsl150 and the mode 4, ive played them and theyre horible. the best marshall i ever played was a mid eightys valvestate 200w bi-chorus, id like to own one but theyre really rare. only ever heard of twoo saw both and one was torn to shit. oh and ive had solid states that would eat tubes in a volume contest haold their tone whether cranked or not, and this amps one of them(rh200sc)

Now that I know what tone you are looking for I agree with you 100%. The Randall is perfect for the tone you are after. I didn't think the TSL was that bad but the Mode 4 is aweful. You would really dig the old Laney Linebacker Pro SS amps. They have that high gain SS thing going on too.
If you ever get a chance to play a Marshall 2210 or a 2203/4 with a mod or a boost in front of it you would change your mind regarding Marshall. Rectifiers and heavy metal are practically the same word.

If you actually have played two real "mid-'80's" Valvestates, you should have bought them. Valvestates weren't introduced until 1991, according to the Marshall website.
