quick rectifier question

it's been a while since i last played an older 2ch recto. iirc, the orange channel can be set clean as well as vintage hi gain, but unfortunately i don't recall how gainy the vintage higain mode can become. is it enough for searing leads? the 3ch version certainly has enough when set to vintage higain, but i'm unsure about the 2ch version.

furthermore, can anybody give me some info regarding the different 2ch recto versions? i kinda lost track....blackface, small logo, attached/detachable power cord, etc etc.....maybe you could tell me which version came first, what's the latest etc.....afaik the '94 rectos are the best of the bunch, how can i identify one as a '94 version - aside from checking the serial number?

I can't help you too much but, I will say I actually like my 2003 3-Channel Triple Rectifier over my friend's way in demand, blackface small logo 2nd year Dual Recto.

I'm currently looking at a normal diamondplate 2 channel recto, big logo, attached powercord, that has this kind of bar on the back instead of a full cover.
which year would that be?
i assume it's a pre '95 one, due to the attached powercord. iirc, only the first few rectos (around 92-93) featured the small logo, but i could be mistaken

I have owned every dual you can imagine, the 3 channel i keep going back too. Basicaly the normal 2 channel head or rack are the best, i am talking the ones after 95/96, before then i dont believe they had as good of gain as the newer ones. The orange channel is good, however these amps are limited in voicing options, you can download the manual from mesa website for the 2 channel version now and that should answer your questions.

i did already download the manual, so i'm fully informed about the limitations. i just don't recall how the higain mode of the orange channel sounded in comparison to the 3ch's vintage mode.
maybe you prefer the 3ch for added versality....sure, 3 independent channels plus solo boost definitely opens up a lot of sonic ground, but somehow the 2ch had a purer tone to my ears....less fuzz and mud.

I guess it depends alot on style of music you are going for. If you want that old style brutal metal then the 2 channel will do you, but if you want old style mixed with new then a 3 channel will do. basicaly the orange channel on an older 2 channel will sound like the orange channel on a 3 channel with less fuzz as you say and a tad bit less gain. By the way the major difference between the older 2 channel's and newer 3 channels are pots and a tad bit more gain, you can make a 3 channel sound like a two channel but lowering the gain and not putting as much treble/presense in.

Now just a reminder for people that are not the greatest with amps, that qoute on qoute fuzz that everyone complains about is the same fuzz you hear on all these albums you love. Most people that complain of fuzz are those that like older metal or rock, however if you like newer metal then you want the fuzz, and besides that fuzz mix's in great with the mix and you dont even notice it in a band situation, just when playing alone do you notice it.

I preferred the 2 channel early or rackmount DRs over the 3. Not as versatile, but warmer, more defined and less buzzy. All are good amps though.

i actually prefer the single recto model.
less wattage so i can get to the sweet spot easier and it sounds smoother than a dual/triple imo.

I owned one. Nice amp. However, you can dial in an early dual to get a smoother tone with less watts - run it in spongy mode, pull the two inside or outside tubes. You'll get about 38 watts, according to Mitch Faber. He was the head customer service tech guy back in the early 90s, cool dude who shared that with me back in the day.

i'll try to buy the amp i'm watching right now. i always wanted a recto, and atm i have sufficient funds, so why not go for it.
besides, that would kinda complete my amp collection...jcm800 (sound reference nr 1), 5150 (the official swedish melodic death amp), and a recto (most other types of metal). yeah, should be just fine [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

I would think you could get a pretty killer lead sound out of the vintage gain setting. From what I remember, I think I'd use the vintage setting over the modern as it cuts throught the mix a bit better. It's not quite as bassy.

My main distortion sound comes from the second channel on the Vintage setting, it definitely has more cut and better definition. Of course I don't go for a metal sound like a lot of people here do, I go for more of a Foo Fighters/Colour and the Shape era tone. Now that I think about it, if you listen to From Autumn To Ashes' first album, thats about what my guitar sounds like.

My buddy has a 1st year Dual Rectifier. Attached power cord, 2 channel, no solo feature. It is from the first run of Duals. If I recall, he bought it in the early 90's.
Its the best sounding Rectifier I have ever heard. Other noteable Rectifiers I have owned that sounded great were a 94? Tremoverb head and Sambencuda's 3 channel Single.
I have never heard a rack mount Dual but I have heard they are the best ones of all.
