• JCM800 with piercing highs? Tube problem?

My 4010 combo was unreasonably shrill last night for some reason. Can tubes cause this? It didn't sound broken, just ice-pickish no matter how I set the low/mid/high. I ended up using an eq pedal and cutting all the highs.

Any ideas? It seems like it has been getting that way over the last couple of weeks, the more I play (warms up), the less lows/mids come through. I also played about 4 hours and it seemed to get worse by the end of the night.

change the v1 preamp tube, maybe it's going bad.
other than that, the filter caps might be about to die. kinda likely actually...

I never have had piercing highs before from filter caps, from caps, it's been like, a couple guitars playing out of tune sounding.

The 1st position pre amp tube, could be microphonic, however, it's like, it would do it almost all of the time I would think, since they don't really get hot.

Your power tubes could be to blame, because you mention lows/mids don't come through. I've had bad power tubes that made the sounds, really tubby and woofy.

I had a '80 JMP master lead mkII (same circuit at jcm800 I'm told), it was so bright, I alwasy ran the high control knob all the way down.
Was it a strange room w/ a lot of hard walls?, electrical current can affect your tone too. Maybe mine had something wrong w/ it, -same as yours?, I just assumed that's the way it was.

It was a new room to me this last time. I am going to start with the V1 tube, then do the whole thing tube-wise. If that doesn't help, it's off to tech-land.

It had new LCR filter caps 4-5years ago, but ya never know.....

ok, then the filter caps shouldn't be the culprit. i thought you never replaced them, and after all it's a 20yr old amp
