• THD Univalve Owners???

So, how do you guys like this amp? I am thinking about getting one. I have so many tubes laying around it would be fun to mess around with it.

They appear to be going up in price pretty quick which is putting them pricewise not far from the Bi-valve now. I was thinking a BiValve would be a better route/value for me, then I noticed a Flexi 50 has the same features of both + more to offer. The clincher in this point is that the flexi 50 has power switching to 20 watts for within a couple hundred of the Bi-valve's used price zone. For me, that nailed another potential future amp selection.

I am thinking that with the proper tubes I might be able to get really close to a Matchless Spitfire tone.

I was weighing it out against a Peters 10 or a Groove Tubes solo. They're both within the same target price but the THD seems to have the added features I want.

I wanted to buy that Peters from Chuckracer but I had no cash at the time.
Do any of the THD's have an effects loop?

I know the Univalve does NOT, that killed it for me.

I love my Univalve! I mainly run mine with either an EL34 or the Yellow Jacket adapter with an EL84. I use 12AX7s for both the input and driver tubes.
I believe the Bivalve and Flexi 50 have effects loops. http://www.thdamps.com/index.htm

John - they are flexible, but the circuits are totally different. A spitfire runs class A/B with two EL84s. The Univalve will require an adaptor to run a single EL84, and even then it's class A.

I loved my Univalve, but it wasn't a spitfire, for good or bad.

Re: THD Univalve Owners???

One other thing about the Univalve - it's a loud little sucker for running one power tube, but you might have problems gigging with it, depending on the tube you use, and how hard your drummer hits. Even using a KT88 or 6550 power tube, it's not going to be as loud as a push/pull amp that uses a pair of power tubes like a Spitfire, Marshall 18 *cough* , Fender Princeton, etc. What the univalve really excels at in my opinion is for recording and home use, espeically towards the louder end of home use since the attenuator sucks tone pretty bad once it's about 1/2 way up. Very cool amp though!

do you feel the same way about the hotplate, or do they not put that technology inside their heads?

The hotplate and what the univalve has in it are two different things. Lower wattage amps can get away with a purely resistive attenuator like what's in a univalve - I have used it in some of my lower wattage builds too - but the hotplate is a little more advanced. Hotplate still sucks the tone a bit when you really turn the volume down. I think any attenuator works best the least amount you dial in - because a lot of the tone at high volume is from stressing the speakers and also the sheer power/volume.

I also have a Weber MASS that rocks, and it has a speaker motor inside it - but even it screws with the tone at huge levels of attenuation.

The Flexi 50 is class A/B with a line level effects loop. From my present understanding of it, it has the ability to run two output tubes of different makes capable of being independently biased to match. The wattage switch is essentially a voltage cut dropping plate voltage from 475 to 325 plus it has a built in variable level footswitchable boost with a independent tone control.

The only drawback is it is single channel input.

You can read more on it and hear a few clips here.

If I'm buying a THD, this is where my cash is going. It is what I consider, 'a tweakers delight' (and I consider myself a tweaker) Not to mention, you can add a Soldano Hot mod to the front end being it has a master vol. Set the sucker on 20 watts and put in a hot mod, I bet it would rip but also have enough power/volume on tap to open up when you need it.

Listen to the Counfunk clip.. it rips.

Pete, why does a Spitfire come with a 2 button footswitch. What does it do?

Yo, right here! Great little amp, and I gig with it. I actually use a 6K6 for most gigs into an 8 ohm cabinet. I may break out the 6550 again, though. the local venues usually mic the entire band, so volume's not much of an issue. It is loud, mean and very, very fun.

Spitfire doesn't come with a footswitch - it doesn't have a footswitch jack on it.
