3 ch.s Bogner 101b

2 ch VHT 50 CL, Splawn QR

I have all 3 and they do what your looking for.

I think the VHT CL does the Brown sound a bit better...

I am currently looking for a new head. I have a rack system but I like the plug and play simplcity of a good head. I recently parted ways with a Stiletto...it sounded great and I may actually grab another one since they are being sold stupidly cheap at GC right now. But, I would prefer 3 channels and would like to check some other rigs out first.
Some of my favorite albums for tone are:
VH II and Fair Warning
Dokken Under Lock and Key
Ratt Invasion of Your Privacy
TNT Tell no Tales
Extreme first album and Waiting for the Punchline

I would prefer the versatility of three channels but could get by with two depending on the dynamic response of the amp.
Any suggestions from you guys?

Re: Amp Suggestions?

I hear nothing but awesomeness about these splawns..

OK I'll just play "Moron" hear..they look like old Marshalls..which is cool..and they are built very well so I've read..does it sound like a hotter JMP or something...that's my impression so far..

Somebody posted a white one w/gold piping at it was perdy!!

What's up with these Splawns and how much for a head..I also keep reading you really need the Splawn cab too..

Shawn Lutz said that I think..I seem to concur with his amp choices and the kind of tone he goes for..same kind of tone..but I prefer a bit more gain for what I do.

you got my attention man!!

I'm not doing a search..I want to hear it from you guys!!

Re: Amp Suggestions?

I owned the splawn, very good amps, basically a hot rodded marshall, actually they take the 1987's and JCM's etc.. and hot rod them. I would say you get slightly below the gain of a XTC but it is pure marshall tone. The guys in that Van Halen cover band use them because it nails that tone so perfect, so does the one guitarist that plays for Stephen Percey doing all the Ratt songs.

However what this guy is looking for will get him the tone, but channel wise it does not have it, and for the money he could get better in my opinion. Here is Splawns Website with sound clips. http://www.splawnguitars.com/sound_clips.htm

What he is looking for i would say his best options are the bogner XTC, or the Tri-amp or a 5150-II

Re: Amp Suggestions?

Splawn builds them from the ground up, boards and all.
The newer quick rod has seperate EQ for each channel. I have the older one.

Rupe if price is not concern what not buy 2 amps? I find usually 95% of the time w/channel switcher or 3 channels amps do NOT do all 3 things great, they do 3 things ok or maybe one or 2 things pretty good. Simplicity in design is key ala 2203/04, VHT Deliverence etc..

Bill that was my Splawn, its an older model with Shared EQ. The newere ones have EQ for each channel and 3 gears, the 3rd geat puts you over the top in the gain and modern voicing..I like mine so much I can't see if I'd like the newer ones better...this ones a keeper

Some great feedback here...thanks. I can't find aywhere out here to check out a Splawn but I'm gonna go fire up some VHT's and revisit the XTC and Uber.
Anyone tried the Diezel VH4 and/or Herbert?

Actually after buying my 2204 i am in Marshall heaven and i went to sell it but had no bites. I figure eventualy down the road in another 5 years i should be able to get alot more then i was asking now so it can sit there in storage. Right now i have so many amps that i do not even have a spot to set it up. Right now i have the following.

Bogner Uber
Soldano Slo Rack
Bogner XTC
Mesa Stiletto Trident.
Marshall JCM800 2204 Vertical 50 watt
Marshall JMP 100MV 1977
Marshall 30th in blue tolex EL34
Peavey 5150-II
Line 6 Flextone II

I also have a rack system that has a ADA-MP1, JMP-1 and a Randall 50/50. Usually there would be my GMajor in there too, but i lent that to noodles for now.

So as you can see i am slighly over loaded on equiptment.

Wow, quite a collection. I have had the same 800 100 watt for 17 years, the 30th is the only other head that really got me thinking but they are soooo expensive.....the blue one you have is very collectable I belive. I like your JMP also!

It is collectible, but it is not the one with Brass Chassis, that is the most collectible one, but i have also heard alot of people say they have played them and they sounded like crap, maybe whoever did the hand wireing sucked on those special ones.

Ironic, the two marshalls you like that i have are the two i want to unload, probaly because i am just so in love with my JCM800. But like the 30th, i see i will have to wait a few years to get what i want for my JMP, unfortunaly the cosmetic condition of that one is rough but it plays and sounds great.
