    Re: power conditioning?

Ther are somewhat of a range of things that are called power conditioners.

Some are just glorified rack mounted outlet strips that have surge protection (cheap 50-150 bucks), some actually keep AC voltage constant and prevent brownouts from hitting the equipment (expensive $400 and up).

if ya got a rack, just get a furman or rack rider.
moster cable makes one now that is good too.

bottom line is a power conditioner is good for you gear. it helps protect it better than a surge protector power strip and can cut down on unwated electrical and ground noise.

      more details:
a power strip "surge protector" has a metal "o" ring (if you will) that physically breaks down when subjected to powersurges. the surge is directed to this metal peice instead of the sockets of it's outlets. but over time this breaks down all the way. ever shake an old powerstrip and hear it rattle? - that's it and your powerstrip is no longer a "serge protector".

a power "conditioner" has 2 electro magnets with no actual connection between its power chord (from the wall outlet) and its sockets. the electricity flows through the electro magnetic field. so when a surge happens it is contained in that electro magnetic feild and not transfered to your gear. it "conditions" the surge like a compressor conditions a loud audio spike.
