Best Amp For the Money?

I'm tired of the lame tone my DSL 100 puts out.. And I'm not buying new. So far it looks like a 5150 is my best bet; any year in particular that is better then the other? Any other options I have? I mostly play metal and blues. 'the amp' would be going through a 1960A marshall 4x12 with the 75watt celestions.

The normal 5150's all pretty much sound the same, there isn't any difference between the script or block letter versions other than the year it was made and the tubes it shipped with.

I don't know if you're going to be too pleased with the 5150 when using it for Blues but the high gain / metal stuff sounds great.

As far as best values, Ampeg VH140, Marshall 8100, and Randall RH50T are all pretty killer amps for the price.

Any carvin? I've always thought they were a great value. The v3 looks really versatile and there are a lot of great tones posted on the carvin board, everything from blues to high gain. Carvin has some tones up under the support section. The clean tones of all the carvins I've heard are great as well.

Tried and true...and they do whoop ass for the money!

I likes mine with a BBE422 in the loop and on a 5150 Bun...some folk likes their's with a pickle on the side.. [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

I wouldn't choose a 5150 for blues although if you were using a DSL100 for blues I suppose it would work for you.
The Carvin Legacy would be an outstanding choice for both blues and metal.

I had a Laney GH100L used, practically brand new for a little over $400. cant beat that. I dont think they go for much these days, great amp for the money.

Jon_B, may be have your amp checked? I mean it is all in the eyes of beholder etc, but it should not sound particularly lame. It is a decent amp, may be it is not working properly, or problem somewhere else in the signal chain... then you will not fix it by going with a different amp. By doing so you're going to get a different tone, different charecter but not all the sudden 'great' vs 'lame'. Just my opinion.

I like my Soldano Astroverb, it's not as high gain as most of the other stuff suggested so it's better for blues. I use an SD-1 in front of it for metal sounds great

My drummer just got a Carvin MTS head...Oh man.

I saw him play it with his Thin Lizzy tribute band, and I played it at our gig last week. It can cover blues-rock and metal quite nicely. Plus it won't set you back more than $500 for the head on ebay.

Hell brand new the head goes for $599, i wouldnt pay over $400 for it used on ebay. I played one at guitar center and it sounded great, but depending on style of metal you are playing it might not be the amp for you, more of a 80's to 90's metal style amp.

I had a few MTS's with both types of power tubes. Excellent amp for little cash.

if you don't mind solid state, i would try a tech 21 tm300.
this amp is built off of the tri a.c. pedal and it think it does the blues/rock thing very well. the california setting can use a bit more gain, but it is still very musical and can get you into some metal territory. i've seen them go for less than $400.

Laney Laney Laney.

The GH100L or GH50L are stupidly good and don't cost an arm and a leg. Paul Gilbert uses one, Andy Timmons uses the VH100, The guys in Mastadon also use the VH100. Tony Iommi used/uses Laney. If i had the money, i'd go out right now and buy one.
