Jon_B, may be have your amp checked? I mean it is all in the eyes of beholder etc, but it should not sound particularly lame. It is a decent amp, may be it is not working properly, or problem somewhere else in the signal chain... then you will not fix it by going with a different amp. By doing so you're going to get a different tone, different charecter but not all the sudden 'great' vs 'lame'. Just my opinion.

Sorry, I should have stated my situation a little better, it's actually not a bad sounding amp. Some of my guitars sound better through it than my other ones. Not too long ago it had stopped working, no sound; so I went out and got some new tubes, still no sound. So I sent it back to my music shop and they couldn't find anything wrong with it, rebiased it and put the old tubes back in. Got it back and worked fine for a little bit, but I noticed when I didn't warm up for more than 5 minutes I would start playing and after about 30 seconds the volume would fade to nothing, sometimes I could catch it and switch to standby for a bit and it would play fine from then on; but now it won't make any sound. There is a slight noise when I plug the cable into the input jack on the head, but nothing on the other end of the cable. I tried the new tubes, and no difference.

Anyways, thanks for all the suggestions! Time for something new anyways.

The GH100L or GH50L are stupidly good and don't cost an arm and a leg. Paul Gilbert uses one, Andy Timmons uses the VH100, The guys in Mastadon also use the VH100. Tony Iommi used/uses Laney. If i had the money, i'd go out right now and buy one.

Here is my opinion for best tube amp for the money:

For metal only... used Peavey 5150, Triple XXX
For blues/rock/metal... used Carvin Legacy, Mesa Tremoverb

With that said.. my Soldano rack system will crap all over any of the above.

rivera M-100. boutique build quality, excellent clean/vintage drive channel, versatile OD channel...it won't do death metal but gets a KILLER hot rod marshall to boogie mark series distortion. OD channel has 2 different mid frequencies available to get it more marshall like or more boogie-ish...the effects loop can be used as a volume boost with an extra gain stage, or as a loop.....hmmmm, the power stage can be run on triode or pentode for the power tubes which is a lot like boogie's vintage/modern switch...you can get the output stage to work at 100, 50, 25, or 10 watts.....

it kills!!!! used runs about 800.00......
            GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

            and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

jg - it is the amp i live and die by!!!! i have used one since 1990 and have NEVER found another amp that evens comes CLOSE to giving my tone the way the rivera does. my past and current amp list includes:

                carvin V3
                soldano astroverb
                soldano SLO
soldano SP77 w/ peavey classic 50/50 power amp
ADA MP1 w/ peavey classic 50/50 power amp
                1981 marshall JCM800 2204
                marshall jubilee head
                mesa mark IV
                mesa maverick head
                mesa lonestar head
                fender super 60
                fender bassman 100
                fender tremolux
                1961 fender bassman
                5150
                rivera KH2
                rivera r55
                line 6 flextone II HD

i can play almost any guitar, but only my rivera gives me what i NEED to expres myself completely.

Re: Best Amp For the Money?

i second the 5150. also check out the split channel marshall jcm800 versions (2210 and 2205)...not as expensive as the single channel ones, but still very good - if you like the marshall sound.

"I'm tired of the lame tone my DSL 100 puts out"
i thought the dsl100 sounds at least fine. just don't go crazy with the gain (no more than 2:00 on od1, that's plenty for anything but death metal anyways), keep the presence off or near off, and don't scoop your mids. ah yeah, and fuck the deep and tone switch thingys...pure crap.
i seriously recommend you go and have a good tech check it out if there are any problems. don't ditch it for something you might very well like not as much.

+1, laney's are great sounding and cheap....just not exactly versatile.

MD, that's quite a nice list!
