• Boss Octave Pedal

I'm watching some Boss OC-2 Octave pedals on ebay. Anyone got any stories about these? Are they worth it? Will I use it? I would think you could get some interesting leads with this.

They don't track well on most of the settings. Best for single note playing. The OC-3 is a bit better with a built in distortion mode. You can do a mean version of Manowar's "Defender" or Hot Chocolate's "Everyone's a Winner" that's about all I got out of it....

The Boss Octave pedal is not really very useful. If you want interesting leads get a Boss PS-5 Super Shifter.

I had one for a while that I liked, it was the OC2. I never really felt like I got a chance to utilize it like I should have though, because someone stole it. It tracked kinda slow if you tried to do too much with it but it really nailed that CKY/early 311 sound.

Get a harmonizer pedal - you can do octaves, it will track better and you can even do cool harmonies with it! I use mine live to play all sorts of '2 guitar' solos and it works great.

Yeah, if you are looking for harmonies the OC2 isnt really the best thing...its better for doing weird shit rather than simulating having two guitar players.

I had a OC-2 it was terriable, very limited unless you want to play a Sabbath paranoid solo. The Boss HR-2 Harmonist is much better for melodic metal.

Nope, it's the boss harmonist. I hate having to change the knob for different harmonies, but it's intelligent (meaning you dial in a key, it doesn't just do parallel harmonies) and it sounds good enough for live. My band does some Night Ranger tunes and it's pretty crazy how cool the twin guitar harmonies sound. We also do Shy Boy from DLR, and our bassist/keyboard player can't hang with the guitar/bass line towards the end, so I use it there for an octave.

That's true much better live w/2 guitars / playing against each other, but for me with alot of tweaking & get some great Dokken type sounds??? I still think alot more range than a OC-2.........

                          Re: Boss Octave Pedal

if you learn how and where to use it, it's great to have. if you try to play high gain chrods with it you will be upset with it. listen to some CKY, that will give you an idea of some cool things that can be done with it.

when i downsized my board from 14 pedals to 6, my OC-2 was one that i kept and i won't let go of.

it's all about learning what the pedal can and can't do and where you can fit it in a song. it's fun to have, that's for sure since it can open some new doors to some real FAT riffs.

                            Re: Boss Octave Pedal

I honestly dont trust anything from Boss anymore. I gave a few of thier pedals some trials and they were all useless. I have never used a Boss pedal and been happy with it. All the distortion ones sound the same and horrible, and all the other effects sound cheesey and cheap.

I don't know if it would make much difference in your case, but the OC-3 "polyphonic" mode destroys the OC-2 in terms of tracking. I tried every octave pedal I could locally (unfortunately, that means in-stock at Guitar Center), and the OC-3 was the only thing worthwhile. I'm sure there are better pedals out there, but the price was right and it was superior to anything in the same range.
