A nice compact transportable head would be a Sovtek Mig 50 or 60 and a Line 6 Uber pedal or even a Boss Metal Zone.

Older Carslbro tube 50 or 60 which should be pretty reasonable as the prices on eBay haven't gone beyond what range you're looking in.
The newer Carlsbro Fatboy 30 is in that price range too I believe..thats a combo tho. A Selmer Treble n Bass if you can find one in your area used or some of the other Selmer valve amps outside of a select few collectable models.

Other options: .. Trace Elliot Speed Twin for a newer amp, Dynacord had some nice older tube amps which should be available in the UK, I also would consider an old Silvertone head, Magnavox. There's alot of old tube makes available in the UK that are unique.

Great score James! That's a helluva deal and I'm sure you'll like it! If it doesn't sound great at first for whatever reason, just remember, a change of tubes will transform an amp. Laneys have a good rep and I think you'll be happy!

I have a Laney AOR 100 and love it. I've had it a long time without a problem.

Let us know your impressions...if you would. I have a 50 and a 100w but I don't use them very often...just enough to charge the caps every once in awhile.. Mulder1966 uses em too (hope you don't mind the mention Mark)

Pics up with the 650xl soon boys!!!

First off, its f*cking heavy!!!! The head weighs as much as the cabinet but is harder to carry!!!!!
I havnt had chance to put my Charvel through it, or my distortion pedal, but using my Aria PE Limited Edition (40th Anniversary model), I can get an amazing classic rock tone, and have been playing bastardised recycled Deep Purple riffs all day

Only faults with it, the handles on the cabinet have come out and the guy has replaced them with grey foam tube pipe insulation. Strangely, this makes it a shitload easier to carry! So its a plus!!! And it looks more custom!!!
