In the same range, there's also the RAT and.... er... I don't know which others. But I'm GASing bad for something similar that I can later mod for more gain, so I could use it for the clean channels on some amps. I want a tone that's organic, not too sterile, and quite clear, though the rest of my rig is pretty clear already. I want enough gain to play heavy metal, but not er... well not THAT much gain. Metallica like is enough. My budget is also sub 60USD shipped here, so it has to be modable to achieve this goals. Shoot! Thanks guys

i have the DS1. Im using it now when I practice at low volumes on my Mesa Boogie Mark IV combo. I can get a little dirt out of the Mark 4 at super low volumes, but I use the DS1 to kick it up a notch, since the Mark IV needs to be super cranked to get an awesome sound, an its a loud amp. love my DS1!

If you know about electronics, the old Ibanez Tube Screamer should be available on the net for DIY'ers. I haven't checked lately but years back, schematics, circuit board layout and parts lists were available for download.

Yeah, it's low gain, you're right. But a fairly good (middly) gain. I used to have two pedals for my 80'ies distortion: a home made TC Booster/LineDriver&Distortion followed by a Tube Screamer. It was heaven. The schematics are out there... a 1 sec search gave this link:

Sorry you don't like the mt2, I'm happy with mine so far. I haven't had a chance to try the uber metal yet but have heard a lot of good things about it. I'd also like to try the rocktron silver dragon one of these days. The demonizer looks cool to me also but it's kind of pricey, I'd like to demo one anyway though. I almost had a hm2 a little while ago but it fell through. I have yet to hear one but I've heard it's good if you have an eq for it.

Ibanez TS9DX
Its a Tube Screamer with 4 switchable modes of gain. The lightest setting is the stock TS9. The heaviest setting is more gain than you would ever need for metal and it won't mess with your tone.
On the lightest settings you can push an already overdriven tone into metal territory.
On the medium settings you can push a slightly crunchy tone into metal territory.
On the maximum gain setting you can do metal on a clean channel with the gain on the pedal around 7.
Its not scooped like a Metal Zone. Its organic and almost brown.
With a slightly overdriven tube amp I can get Lynch tones on the meduim gain setting with the gain set around 6.
