If I remember correctly, the clean channel on the 5150 combo sounds a lot better because the amp is actually biased closer to where it should be, instead of the ice cold that most Peavey heads are biased at from the factory. I could be mistaken though!

And honestly, I think the clean on the 5150 doesn't sound that bad anyways, especially with a few effects on it.

Mantis -congrats on the combo, glad you like it, that is the most important thing!

Dunno, saw Jeff Loomis with Kranks and his tone was horrid. And if my boy there can't get it to sound live, I doubt I can...

I'll stick with my CAE/VHT rig for now.

Hey, man...if YOU like it...everyone can take a dump in their hats. You bought, you play it..so all that matters is if YOU like it.

I am glad you have achieved amp Nirvana.

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

            Wow guys,
I got mixed feeling about your replies.First off let me say that I'm a tone freak. Not many guitarist put so much time and effort into there sound. Over the years I have listened to great guitarist with terrible tone. One of my friends is a incredible guitarist, uses really good gear like Mesa Boogie , Ibanez and Jackson and has some of the worse tone I have ever heard. Most of the time it's not the gear that sounds bad but the person setting it up. It's an art to dial in an amp. I spend sometimes months dialing in an amp. Writing down the setting then changing them to another setting.

Well I like my amp. I have played everything I could get my hands on and money wasn't the problem. I was willing to spend what it took to get an amp that passed my clean channel test, then drive channel test. My amp passed both tests and thats why I own it. I don't own it because my favorite guitar player uses it or the guy down the street. I own it because I like it.

The comment about how you can judge a amp by sound clips is wrong.Sund clips only give yo an idea how the amp sounds. I don't have any home recording gear yet but when I do, I'll be sure to post my tone. I'm proud of how my sound is and over time it will get even better. How many amps can you play with no effects and be very happy with?? I can play mine and not need anything.

If you wanna know how mine sounds, you can go to the krankamps website and listen to the tone on 5 speeds song there and the last sound clip by the recording dude. Both of those clips are very similar to my tone. The 5 speed is closer. I can recreate that tone exactly. I actually like that song 2. Does anyone know what cd that is???

The Peavy combo was used it was a 5150. I don't rememeber it being a series II or anything. It could have been. I liked them when they first came out years and years ago in only a head and cab. But then I didn't have the money to buy a stack so I got a Peavy 2 x12 combo bandit. Nice practice amp. the cleans where better then the Mesa Boogie Recto's and the drive channel was nice. I thought I could do something with that amp if I couldn't find what I was looking for. I actually was depressed when I couldn't get the Mesa Boogies to work out for me. I really wanted one as one of my friends has a dual rec and has the very best heavy metal tone out of any guitarist I ever heard live. Killer tone he gets out of that thing. I just didn't like the clean channel.

So there you have it guys, I like my amp. Thanks for commenting positive or negitive. Think of it this way, if everyone liked the same thing, we would all have the same tone. that would be very boring.

Hey man, it's great that you got a good sound out of it. I can relate totally to what you are saying. I am very picky about my tone too, and like I said, I use a Crate Blue Voodoo most of the time. So many people rag on them, but mine honestly sounds so damn good. I get compliments on my sound all the time. By the same token, everyone praises the 5150, but the only experience I have with them is my other guitar player who uses one, and his tone blows goats. I'm not saying 5150s suck, but his sound sure does. I must apologize for my negative comments, especially given our similar circumstances. However, when I tried that Krankenstein out at Long and McQuade, I was shocked by how awful it sounded. It certainly could have been the guitar, or the pickups, but more than likely it was just a bad one. I know that there are bad Blue Voodoos from first hand experience. Before I bought mine, I tried one out a couple of years before at House of Guitars, and it was pure shit.

zeegler, have you ever bought a guitar from House of Guitars? I wonder what you think of the sales staff there? I like the owners, they seem to really help when they're around, but the staff there is pretty worthless, at least the few I've dealt with. It's like talking to mutes who don't really care. There are also a LOT more guitar that they keep either upstairs or in the basement.

checked out the Krank site and didnt like the tone..lol..must be my unmusical years, perhaps when i get better i might like it

Danny Jones has a killer clip up there(playing wise)i like his bluesy playing a lot but feel the Krank isnt letting his harmonics ring out cleanly-some amps are like that, thats why sound clips are usefull.

Your right about its good for us not to all sound the same, the krank has tone all to its self.It looks great, must say that

I can respect that dude. I think it's alot in the way you set up the amp. Your other guitarist may not have the skills like one of my friends. He has really good gear and his tone is aweful. We call it "Vinnie Tone", thats his name and we all laugh about it. Even his drummer thinks it sucks but his guitar playing makes up for it.

                    jjw,
If you listened to the 5 speed clip, thats basically my tone when playing the drive channel. I'm a 80's metal Guitar player at heart trying to get with the times of today.I'm really exploring the newer metal bands like Nevermore, Alterbridge,Trivum, etc. I can't get into the screaming death metal stuff as I like a clean tonefull good range singer like Skid Row. Chad from Nickleback is pretty damn good as well. I perfer that style but like the heavy guitar playing in the thrash/death metal bands.Antrax,Metallica,Megadeath where the very heavy bands I liked back then.

If you listen to all those different guitar tones, I tried to sound like that back then. But there was always something missing in my tone.I never owned a amp with it's own drive channel. I played Fender Twins. The whole drive channel is new to me. I pulled off my tone with Distortion pedals.

It's all good guys, I got alittle pissed but everyone has there right to there opnions.

                    Rock on my Brothers,

                    Dan

it's all in the BBE sonic stomp he's using with his kranks

well, maybe you should buy a real amp, like a marshall

Yes the amp has a very modern drive channel. You also can call this amp dark. It has a dark tone to it. Coming from a Fender background which is a bright amp, I'm digging the darkside.Something new and very different.

I use Harmonic's all the tiime, actually it's a huge part of my playing style. I harmonic cords and shake them to get a really cool sound. It takes alot of practice to pull it off but turning your pick sideways and getting your thumb in there is how I pull it off. My Krank has no problem with harmonics' They jump out and stick it to yeah. I love that about it.

I'm very happy with this amp and I'm so looking forward to adding effects and seeing where it takes me. So much TONE to discover with it.

                            No I'm not Danny Jones.

No I never did buy from them. The guitars were stacked in shelves like bookcases, and were all scratched and dinged from banging into each other. Such a shame! They had thousands of nice guitars, and some really cool old stock too. I haven't been there in years. I think it's time for a trip.
