Peavey 5150, Mesa Dual Rectifier, Soldano Avenger. I used to have a Marshall 2204, which was also quite nice.
On a lighter note, I played the 5150 and the Mesa. I also played all the recto series and the lonestar. The lone star had the best cleans out of all of them and the Rectoverb I liked the gain channel as well as the dual and tripple rect. Dialing them in took alot of time to get the setting to the point where I liked the tone but It Mesa could build a Dual or tripple recto and put the Lone star cleans in it, I would own one. there nice and well built amps.
the 5150 was very nice. It's big like my Krank, My krank is taller then most other 2 x 12 combos I looked at.
You guys are a bit too hard on Kranks, IMO. I tried a Krankenstein out, finally, and it was a pretty cool amp. Definately a metal-only amp, and I would only use it blended with another amp, but it was a cool head.
Now... I think it'd be way more cost effective to buy their distortion pedal and run it through a nice tube amp, even if it only gets 95% of the tone.
No pics of the back? Is it a sealed-back combo like the 5150?
Mantis, I'm puzzled by your statement that if not for Krank you might have gotten a 5150 combo, combining that with your statement that your new amp had to have at least Fendery clean tones. The 5150 is widely known to not have a real clean tone. Its forte is crunch rhythm and solo lead tone. Sure it wasn't a 5150II? I believe they have a decent clean channel.
I'll admit I haven't heard one in person, but Pete here on the board tried one and was underwhelmed. He is a great player and also amp builder himself, so I put a lot of stock in his reviews, and also Jgcable's. I don't think John (jg) has played one, if he did I missed the review. Most who've reviewd them have either not liked them, or at least thought you could do a lot better at the price point. I have tried the Peavey JSX head and think that's a hell of a head that you can get for under $1,000 new. It has 3 channels and they all sound good.
But as we all know, it's what sounds best to you that counts! If you get your tone with it and it's reliable, cool beans!

actually, the 5150 combo has a very nice clean channel, not even remotely similar to the head(s). the 5150 combo i demo'ed once didn't sound anything like my 5150I, anyways. the combo sounds much warmer with even more mids and a better (WAY better ) clean channel.
Well THAT'S interesting! Thanks Fragle! If that's the case with the 5150, I'd probably get the combo over a head and live with the 60 watts vs. 120. I don't use cleans that much, but it still needs to sound good. Wonder why the combo's so different from the heads?
