I use the POD 2.0 and my favorites are the Line6 Insane with loads of mids, and the JCM800 with my SD1 to boost it.
For some reasons the Dual Rect models are very dark and hard to dial in on it. Not the best high gain sounds. On another hand the Mesa Mark II dirty channel does a real nice heavy sound (no modern metal though). I'm not too familiar with the Soldanos models yet but I liked what I heard of the SLO. Very gritty and grainy.
As far as cleans go, I love the Tweed Blues (bassman) and Blackpanel (Deluxe Reverb). You can setup the Bassman for a heavily distorted sound using the drive control, and it'd still clean up beautifully using the guitar's volume. And the Blackpanel has an amazing clean tone.
By the way I strongly advise the use of an OD pedal with the POD or similar. It actually takes pedals damn well, and even with the built in Presence, volume and distortion boosts, it makes everything way more versatile.
