i have the same soldano preamp that jgcable uses, and i love its overdrive-very open sounding that works well with chord voicing, harmonics are fantastic too.very responisive too dynamics as well
mind you i use my 2 digitech 2120's at the moment with the band setlist i have at the moment-but i think this weekend i will crank the soldano up on a couple of the more guitar friendly tune we do as it has fucking great natural tube saturated overdrive

Another thing is, I'm just not getting the response from the Flextone III I've got. There's just something about a good tube amp and the way they respond to the subtleties of a guitarists playing. I'm just thinking that 100+ watts is too much for me right now. 50 watts or less would be much more suiting to my situation.

I agree with you there. I can actually feel the tubes in my Soldano when I am playing. Its very reactive.
There is very little difference between 50w and 100w.

Well back in 90/91 I owned a Korean made Soldano 60 and a HR100..I didn't have enough money at that time to invest in MY favorite Sodano which is the SLO 100..which I always thought sounded GREAT..

They are truely "quality" amps that sound similar to what a great Marshall should be..but they have it's own voice of course..

My Korean made 60 SMOKED my HR 100 at the time IMO, which kinda bummed me out..yeesh this was years ago..that Korean 60 NAILED the "Unchained" tone to the T!

I opted to go with Two 5150s at that time just because they seemed to fit my personal taste and requirements..which is mucho gain.

To me the 5150 was a hybrid of sort between a old Marshall Super lead and a Soldano SLO 100..but just more "gain"..but not as "polished" and articulate as either really

I think the Marshalls and Soldano have a much more "defined" sound than any 5150 I had..but with my Marshalls and Soldanos ..I always need a stomp in the front for my "mega-Metal tone..stomps always took away some of the amps natural "organic" tone..and I didn't want to rely on a 50 dollar stomp for my tone....especially when you get a "quality" amp such as a Bogner, Soldano, and whatnot..

          A 3000 dollar amp shouldn't a mandate a 50 dollar stomp IMO..but so many people does this...which is COOL!!

But my tone requirements always seem to go into the buzzsaw realm ..."Death" metal ya know..

          Soldanos kick ass!!

You will never be "stuck" with a Soldano if and when you ever wanted to sell it..besides you can always find a 5150 in a pinch..I think they do grow on trees..somewhere..out there..

BTW..My Uberschall is my buzzsaw of choice for the moment..it's not going anywhere anytime soon..

soldanos are one of the best amps for solos, they scream like motherfuckers.
as far as rhythm guitar is concerned, they are great for rock, hard rock and 80's metal but for modern stuff.... well they just don't sound modern to my ears.

Exactly E..much like a good Marshall..they do "sing" great for solos...Total classic 80's tone!!!

I think of the Scorpions ala "Blackout" when I think Soldano SLO..well they sound like that to me..

I always like the girthier rythm tone of the 5150..but they seem to be a bit dead in the "lead" department..The Amotts did awesome with theirs..now that shit sounds great IMO

The BBE and an external Eq in the loop seem to remedy that for John and I with the 5150s.

5150's are a great bang for the buck...tried and true and sturdy fuggers...ask John..his was tossed about 50 feet or so down the street..still worked!!!!

                yeah Bill, it's a total 80's amp.

I really like SLO for George Lynch tones, I can nail Lynch Mob Wicked Sensation tone to the T with these amps.

I disagree 200% then. I can get a decent modern tone from mine. And there is a member on the Soldano forum that gets killer tone from his SLO. His band is fairly modern. Not metal but the tone is fairly heavy and low end. Certainly not Uber heavy but it doesn't wreak of 80's style rock. Check out his MP3's here. No 80's vibe in any of them IMO.

Mine won't do a modern scooped metal tone but then again, I am not using a SLO. I have the SP77

Mine does have a fairly heavy bottom end though. Way more bottom then most people would expect from a Soldano.
Bills example of Blackout by The Scorpions is a great example of what my Soldano sounds like. Its an extremely defined metal tone. Kind of like a cleaned up "Posh" 5150.

I could never get my sp77 to do modern well either. The SLO I just turn the presense completely down scoop out the mids and run the bass and treble both around 6.

Um.. I checked out those clips, not bad ..80's tone, but in a modern-ish format..me thinks!

There was a Solano dealer just down the street about 15 years ago ...I immediately started playing "Blackout" everytime I fired up an SLO.

I heard nuthing but great things about those SP77s especially for the money..it's prolly in the JMP-1 territory which I still really like for leads and certain authentic 80's shred tones..I would assume the Soldano would sound more "organic"..I'd love to try one..

I use a Parametric EQ in the loop of my SLO to get a scooped metal nu metal thing. It works well. Need an eq with a send and return volume though to make it work right.

Scorpions _ Blackout is what it sounds like to my ears too!

I love the SLO. I tried a Bogner Ecstacy Classic this weekend and it sounded great but I think I prefer the SLO. The SLO is not as flexible as many of the 3 and 4 channel amps out there though. If you need that many tones though I would go for the Bogner. I really only use one channel so the SLO works great for me. I will probably keep it forever. It is the tone that I had been searching for for years.

I have had the 5150's too and those too me were killer for the money. They dont sound like the SLO to my ears but I liked them a lot. Many people say they do but I dont think so. The Avenger gets a touch more gain then the HR50 and I like to have that extra room there in the gain dept.

I would get an Avenger over a HR50 and I think It will be my next Soldano product. Oh Yeah. Customer service is insane. Mike calls you back personally and you get a person on the phone within 3 rings most of the time. If you leave a message it will be returned by end of day. A+ all around for Soldano.

Come on now. If I posted those clips and asked what amp I doubt the number one answer would be the Soldano SLO. You guys kill me sometimes. lol Especially you Bill. 80's modern? They always said the 80's would be back. I think Soldano gets a bad rep as being a 80's rock amp and that's it. Lets not forget Stevie Ray used this amp for blues. It definitely takes some tweaking. And personally since I've messed with the crunch channel I think it is probably my favorite in combination with a boost pedal. The OD channel is without a doubt the typical Soldano high gain searing lead tone that they became famous for. There is a lot of versatility in the crunch channel that a lot of people never explore though. I've even seen a few post where users called it a channel that has no use what so ever. I couldn't disagree more. Just wish it was footswitchable. That's my only complaint.
