  • Running in stereo with two guitarists?

Do you guys think it'd be worth having each guitarist play through a cab on both sides of the stage? The only complaints we get are that that the house mixing rarely does the guitars justice, so on one side of the stage you'll only hear one guitar and on the other, the other. By running into a cab on both sides of the stage our sounds will be much more balanced, at least that's my hope. Any thoughts or comments?

That's what I would do if you have the space on stage and equipment. Otherwise only people in the center hear the correct mix

Sambencuda and myself just did a gig and we both used Vetta's. We ran in true stereo. He used his Vetta combo on one side and one of my Randall 2 x 12's on my side. I used my Vetta HD with a Randall 2 x 12 on my side and his Genz benz 2 x 12 on his side. The most compliments we received that night were regarding the guitar tone. It was great being able to hear his guitar and he said the same about me.
Its a great idea. Especially if you have an incompetent or non existant soundman.

Speaking of a soundman, try to make sure both guitars are also in both sides of the PA else you kind of defeat the purpose of having more cabs

I'm friends with the guitarists in NY band Twilight Odyssey, and they have a cool way of going about this...

Both run fullstacks, but the bottom cabinet of each stack is run by the other guitarists head. They hear themselves up above, other guitarist down below, and the audience hears both, and fairly well. Work's out very nicely, especially if you have amps that blend together well (5150 and Triple Rec IIRC? That'll sound a-fucking-mazing).

This sounds like a good idea on paper but in reality to me it seems like it would be a bit of a pain in the ass

Why, Box? Isn't it just a couple extra cables?

Just rolling the cables across stage, then micing this or that, having cables everywhere....Im a bit of a neat freak I guess. Then if something breaks and youre down to one speaker for one guy then two for the other...I dunno.

I can see running a cab on each side in mono, but not true stereo. I ran stereo at gigs for quite a bit with my vetta, and if everyone is in the center of the room it sounds awesome.

Unfortunately, I haven't discovered a way to keep people in the center of the room at all times, so when someone is off to one side at all they hear that side more prominently. Which means they aren't getting the full effect anyways, and depending on what you're doing, they are missing 1/2 of your tones!

I'd personally rather run in mono and no matter where someone is in the room, they hear my guitar as it comes off the cab. Just my opinion. Keyboard player in my band craps a brick anytime he can't run in stereo, but then again he's never gone out on the floor while playing and heard what it sounds like off to the sides.

I guess that's what I mean, both guitarists with a cab on each side... Sorry about the poor wording..

well, i can tell you that this is pretty much the standart way of mixing things. even rather large bands who bring their own soundmen are mixed hard left/right, that's just the way it is. basically, the only bands where you can hear the very same guitar both in the left and the right side of the PA system are those who have only one guitar player

as far as stereo playing is concerned....nah, not my cup of tea. gimme a fullstack on my side, a decent monitor mix with an emphasis on the kickdrum, and i'm set to go.
