  • Cab Impedances

How do you tell what Impedance a cabinet is? Or is there only one impedance a 4x12 can be? Like theyre always 8 ohms, and a 2x12 would be 4 ohms? and running 2 4x12s would be 16 ohms?
I dont want to fuck up my valve head!!!

Also, see those tiny Marshall valvestate cabinets (4x10?) would I mess one of them up running my valve head into it? Cos they weigh nothing and are just tiny... Looks like Id break it if i looked at it funny...

In theory, a 4x12 can have several impedances.

Doesn't it say on the back?
Have you tried looking it up on the net?
    Name and model?

The 4x10 won't die on you if you keep sane. Again, what's the specs?

It's pretty basic, know the specs of your gear.

Basically, Ive got a matching 4x12 for my head, but when I play gigs theres generally 4x12s provided. Ive got switchable impedance on my head so thats not a problem, I was just wondering if there was a way of telling, as theres nothing on the back of my 4x12 at all...

I believe there's a meter you can use to determine impedance. Or you could call Laney and tell them what you've got. It being used though it's possible it's been rewired or wired incorrectly sometime in the past, like if a speaker blew and someone couldn't figure out how to replace it right, or got a replacement speaker of a different impedance.

Did you try a search here or in Tech Q&A? Might get better answers... sorry I can't be more specific.

Nah I didnt search cos Im not 100% sure what I was looking for. If I just search 'impedance' itll being up everything that just mentions that word.

The amp is working fine, the problem is I dont want the gig promoter/venue to provide a 4x12 for me and me to end up blowing some valves cos I didnt know it wasnt an 8 ohm cab.

most 4x12's are either 8 or 16 ohms

            maybe this will help

marshall cabs are stock 16 ohms mono 8 ohms stereo.
mesa cabs are stock 8 ohms mono and 4 ohms stereo.

most will be 8 or 16 and should say near the plug on the cab.

for a good read on understanding imedence i reccommend reading the imedence matching section of the mesa boogie dual rectifier manuel located at www.mesaboogie.com

Shouldn't the club owner know? Is there a way to know by taking the cover off?

Someone mistook the left cab for a toilet?
