  • New Amp today

Well, I am getting closer to my perfect sound all the time. I have 2 awesome guitars and finally the right amp to play them thru. This one is so good, my pedals are gonna end of going into storage.

A friend hooked me up with this custom builder in Nashville to build me a little home practice/recording head. It has the ability to use an EL84 or EL34 and is cathode based. Super easy to dial in awesome tone. With this baby, all you need is a speaker (I am using a celestion greenback at the moment) a guitar and a cable and you enter bliss. This is the only tube amp I have ever had the ability to turn the master up over 5 and still be at conversation levels. It has two seperate gain controls for some awesome tone control. Full EQ and just slays. I played thru the EL34 all night and love it. Here's a pic for all you voyeurs out there.

    Two thumbs up!

Sweet!!! I love low-powered tube amps, also. Got me a THD Univalve, and I love being able to use just about any tube power tube in it (though, for an EL84, it needs the Yellow Jacket adapter which I have and love) and any two preamp tubes. Lately I've been using either an EL34 or KT77, but the EL84 definitely gives it more saturation with a raunchy and chimey edge.
Got any more info on your amp, like builder's name or a website?

Yep.. playing out of a small low wattage tube amp is really rewarding. The good ones just SING.

Not nearly enough info, my man!

What kind of tones can you get from her?

Who built it? How much did it run?

            Sound clips??

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

Sorry to be a bit skimpy on the info last night guys, I was just fried and wanted to go to bed.

                OK First things first.

When using the amp with the El84, she puts out 8 watts. I am going to try this tube today, I played thru the 34 all day yesterday.

When using the EL34, the amp puts out 14 watts.

                Runs 2 12AX7's or ECC83's for power.

                drives 4, 8 or 16 ohm cabinets.

Runs Hammond power and output transformers.

That's as techy as I can get. I have no idea how this darn thing works. All I do is put the tube I want to run in, plug it in turn it on and jam.

Here is the guys web adress if you want to see the stuff he makes.

He has some sound clips of the amp there. I would post some, but I have no way of recording them.

Any of you have any suggestions for recording clips?

How do I tell you about the tone this thing puts out?

Wow, I can get ANY british amp sound from this thing by merely varying the two independent gains. That is what blows my mind. I can go from Claptons Cream sound to Kossoff's snarl, to Trowers wail, to Pagey to Blackmoore to Schenker by using those gains. No extra foot pedal needed. I will tell you more once I play the El84 tonight. This amp does all that and I have only used one of the tubes. I am not even halfway there yet.

I dig it, my amp search is finally over.

BTW, I now know why I have never liked any of the Marshalls I have ever played, I couldn't turn them up enough to get good tone out of them. I have undoubtably played some awesome amps, but never got the tubes to really break up and sound good.

Very cool! My "secret weapon" is a small, early 60's 1x10 tube (6AQ5) combo that just breathes fire when cranked. Low wattage tube amps are awesome when voiced well.

It sounds like it's great, and reasonbly priced as well. How much gain does it have when you crank it up?

                        Opeth's Laney tone?

what you mean to say is Opeth's GT-8 tone. the laney is just their power amp.

Damn, that is an interesting little amp. I believe I'm in the same boat as you with Marshalls. So many of my heroes use them and get great tone but I don't like any of the ones I've tried except an AVT150 at GC. Now I realize it's because I've never played any of the tube ones at the volume they need to be to get that Marshall sound.
