Ah, I didn't see he wanted a new one. 1200 definately won't nail a new mesa.

Yeah, I could have. Just giving some advice. Why not go for your own sound and not try to copy somebody else?

Check out the Randall MTS series of amps. They have combos as well as heads/stacks. The nice feature is the all tube design with removable/interchangeable pre-amp modules. You can get tons of different sounds and I have heard there may be a Kirk Hammet module coming out which may give you the tone you want. Price wise, they are pretty reasonable on E-Bay but if you insist on new, they are around $950ish without any pre-amp modules and a bit over $1500 with three modules. Thats for the head. I'm not sure what the combo prices are new.

for the price, a vetta 2 or vetta 1 and upgrade really is a good buy.

if you went for a single recto and recto cab would be great if you wanted to go tube and cover every metallica's album sound more or less.

if you want MOP through AJFA, i'd get a Mark III and Boogie Half Back cab.

if you want budget. i'd get a peavey XXX and matching cab. (peavey kicks ass, i'm still using my peavey PA head from 1992.) and the whole peavey line is just kick ass.

the matching cab is so important with a head.

if you want something really cheap and only play metallica, try a line 6 axs2x12. it has some channel switching issues (delay between some patches) but their metallica sound is dead on.

if you want something better, the vetta is the way to go.

If you want a real budget Metallica tone you could go for a Crate BV120 head and a Boss Metal Zone in front of it.
The Carvin MTS3200 will do it stock
Personally, if you love Metallica and you want their guitar tone, a stock Mesa Boogie Single, Dual or Triple rectifier will do it. Mark III's nail early Metallica but not the later extreme scooped stuff.
Actually, a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone can take almost any amp into the scooped bottom heavy AJFA tone.

a 5150 is a great metal bang for the buck..

I'd have that if not my Uberschall.

I agree Bill, but not for AJFA tone. That record is scooped to all hell with tons of sizzle, no midrange and is bottom heavy. Its actually fairly crappy guitar tone... and it won't work live unless you are playing out of a wall of amps through a massive PA system.
The 5150 is midrangy and slightly grainy. Its a great amp for metal but not for AJFA tone. Maybe if you through a BBE in the loop and an EQ and scooped the piss out of it but not stock.

I got some great tones out of my Line 6 Flextone2 amp. It had the "Insane" model in it. If you could find a "new old stock" one then it should be fairly cheap and can push up to 4 4x12 cabs. I'd personally choose the Line 6 over the Marshall. If you're wanting something similar to the Line 6 then Behringer is putting out some really great sounding stuff at the moment for really cheap prices. They have 4x12's that you can get jenson speakers in and the heads sound great. I personally just bought a Behringer V-amp instead of the Line6 POD. I'd had both before and the V-amp ruled in my opinion so I'd probably go with Behringer if I was on that kind of budget and wanted a new, full stack. You'd still have dough left over to buy another guitar!

The Line 6 Duoverb will get you there
So will the Spyder 2 HD, the Flextone 2HD, the HD147 and the Flextone 3's.
Keep in mind... most modeling amps do a great job with the Mesa tone.
What separates the good modeling amps from the great ones are how good they model Marshall tone. I think its the hardest tone to nail unless you are playing the real thing. The Line 6 Vetta does a great job nailing the Marshall tone. I bet the Flextone 3 does too although I have never heard one.

i'd still rather see him go for a single recto and recto cab, a vetta and vetta cab, or a XXX and XXX cab.

i think he's be happiest with one of those.

thanks for all of your advise. Im going to look into the recto, vetta, and XXX amps and I have another question, you may think I am crazy for asking but giving that I have never played one I will ask anyway. What is the difference in a solid amp(I dont know if solid is right I forgot what you call an amp that does not use tube) and a Tube Amp, Tone Wise...and if you were going for a Metal amp what would be the way to go, recto, vetta, or XXX.
