  • anyone with Randall MTS exp...question 4u

I am wondering something about the Randall MTS series amps.

    1) are these the real deal or glorified modellers? I think I read somewhere that they are based off the circuitry of the amps the different modules take after. Not quite sure what that means.

    2) I see one input on the back of the RM4 (the rack version with four empty slots). I am assuming then I can not run it is stereo. This is not a good or bad thing, but if I am just wondering.

    3) I am assuming it works well with other poweramps like Mesa, PV, Carvin, etc that are not Randall correct? It should be nothing more than a preamp.

    Anyone?

1 - I love em, I'm grabbing one soon. They are all voiced differently and sound great

2 - I think you can run it in stereo, but I can't recall right now and am in a hurry (I'll PM ya later anyway)

3 - Works great with other poweramps. I'm hoping to use it with a VHT 2/50/2. Others on the Randall (Grailtone) board like it

I am still wanting to check out the RM100. None of the local dealer are stocking them. As good as everybody says they I would like to hear one for myself before I drop any cash on one.

There's alway's MF. They sell them and you have 44 days to play it and decide. Just a thought!

I've tried them out quite a few times at one of my local shops. The RM100 is way too fucking loud for almost anyone other than a major touring act. The RM50 would be a much better suit to those who are playing clubs and smaller venues. Plus, they can plug direct into a PA so you can run off a PA amp and not even bring a cabinet. Every module I've tried has sounded great. Maybe not my taste, but they definitely sounded nice. My favorites were the: clean - Blackface and Tweed, low gain - Top Boost (Vox AC30TB), high gain - XTC. The Mesa module (Rectified) sounded too much like a Mesa and the 1086 (dude from Disturbed) was too scooped for me. If I had unlimited funds, Iwould definitely get the rack mount version with the 4 modules. I see no reason why it wouldn't work with another power amp. The only bad thing I've heard is that the thumb screws for the modules wear out after a while. But this was second hand so take that for what it's worth.

Can you pull the outside tubes on the Randall and drop it from 100 to 50 watts like a Marshall? I believe the 50 watt Randall only holds two modules. I have a 50/50 Peavey tube power amp I could use for the 4 module preamp version. Volume ins't really a problem with my band. We are pretty loud on stage. I have a stack and a half and the other guitar player uses to full stacks. We are also running 10, 000 watts on our monitor rig. We are a bar band and most places are to small for us.
I need a new amp and I have been thinking either 5150/RM100/ Soldano or Engl. Right now I am using a Lee Jackson XLA 50 watter.

The RM50 head and combo hold two modules while the RM100 holds 3. THe rack mount holds 4 however. You run one at a time so you're still at 50 watts. But you have a few more choices.

I have an RM100 and they are cool amps! There are many nice features on it like both a series and parrallel effects loop, the ability to bias it yourself when replacing tubes, the fact that it kicks out a bad tube from the circuit if it fails so that you can finish the gig on the remaining tubes, and of course the replaceable pre-amp modules. These modules interchange with the ones from Egnater as well. I have accumulated a few of the available modules including: XTC, Ultra, Ultra Lead, Brown, SL+, Plexi, and Blackface. Blackface is my clean sound and XTC is my favorite hi-gain module so far. They offer the 1086 which from what I understand is pretty heavy but have not heard it myself yet. Also, they are supposed to be releasing 4 different George Lynch modules and I'm anxious to try the Mr. Scarry one myself
Of the amps you mentioned above, the Randall is probably the least expensive. You can get the RM100 with three modules for a bit over $1,500 new or if you go E-Bay like I did you can find them in mint shape with modules for $850ish.
Oh yeah, one more thing is do not go by the sound clips on Randall's website. They all sound alike on there when in reality they do not. There was another place on the net that had better sound clips but I don't remember where.

How is the Brown module? Does it really do a good early-EVH tone?

                      It's very spongy and warm.

Spencer4hire, which modules do you have? So far I'm most impressed with the XTC. I'm keeping my eyes open for a decent price on a Top Boost next and of course the Mr. Scarry module when it becomes available. I was disappointed with the Ultra Lead and hardly ever use it. The name implies a hotter module than it actually is. Anyway, I'm on the mtsforum myself. Are you on that board as well?

Hey Rudy I have all of the original ones except the Top Boost. I need to get the newer ones like the Ultra XL, 1086,and the Lynch modules. Yeah I am not that impressed with the Ultra Lead either. I may have to try changing the preamp tubes in it.Yes I am on the board. I need to do the capacitor mod to my Recto module and a few others.

I never bothered with getting a Recto module since I already have a Mesa Dual Rect. for that Have you played or heard the 1086 or Ultra XL modules? I myself have not but everyone on the MTS board raves about them.
