Oh yea.. regarding the clean channel on the 5150...
I have a block letter, a signature and a 5150II.
They all have very good clean channels unless you are looking for Fender Super Reverb type clean and you play Beatles music.
If you need a great clean for rock and metal the 5150 clean channel is perfect.

well, we obviously have different ideas of a perfect clean channel
in my opinion, the 5150 has a rhythm channel and a lead channel, and i'm using it exactly like that, one channel for rhythm and one for leads. now, what channel is doing what sound is depending on my mood - the rhythm channel has more low mids and less highs, whereas the lead channel has more sizzle and is tighter imho, but also more noisy - but i never think of the 5150 rhythm channel as a clean channel. i never run any amp without a boost (sd1 is my favorite, even the ts 808 ain't got shit on that one imho), so most of the time i end up using the rhythm with crunch engaged (gain at noon) for rhythm and the lead channel with the gain around 10:00 for leads - if i'm not using my cobra, that is
now the 5150II is a different story. i haven't owned one yet - definitely tempted to buy one though! - but apparently the rhythm channel has much less gain than the 5150I rhythm channel. if that is the case it wouldn't suit me at all. however, i'd really love to have the 5150 sound but independent EQs for lead and rhythm - the very reason why i bough the framus cobra, which however has a totally different vocingLast edited by Fragle; 06-04-2006, 03:35 PM.

I've got to agree with JGCable on this one, I have one of the original combos (very early only the single handle on top in the middle).
I use an MXR 10 band eq in the loop and I retubed mine all the way around with JJ's. I put 2 low gain JJ's in V3 and V4 and now the rhythm channel actually sounds nice (as long as I keep the pregain down below 4).
I use the Eq to fatten up the lead channel and kill some of the highs and what I found is that it really smooths out the Rhythm channel when it's clean . Now I can dime the pregain on the rhythm channel (with the crunch off) and get a nice bluesy tone out of it.
the Lead channel still kicks ass and I usually run the pregain there at around 4 or 5 as well.
thru a 4X12 cab with greenbacks the 5150 sounds great clean or dirty.
I don't use any overdrive pedals with mine either.
the more I tinker with this thing, the more I like it!If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

I could alway get a decent clean sound out of my amp. I agree it's not a Fender Twin clean, but then again what is, with the exception of an actual Fender. I use to keep my gain at about 9 o'clock and it worked great for clean.Damn, I love this Interweb.

ok, semi thread resurrection here - i don't want to start a new thread, and yes, i've used the search function, but it didn't return anything usable.
i was wondering if anybody how owns/used to own both a 5150 as well as a 5150 II could post a comparison of those two amps? i've been told that the 5150II lead and rhythm channels have less gain, with especially the rhythm channel set to crunch having far less gain than the original 5150 crunch channel. is that true?
also, i've heared horror stories about 5150II being unreliable as fuck in comparison to the 5150...the 5150 is a workhorse, of course... (no pun intended) any truth to that?
the thing is, i *really* love the sound of my 5150 I block letter head, it is crushing and suits me like a glove. however, i also love my framus for it has 2 independent gain channels, rhythm/lead respectively...the framus is a great amp too, i just think i happen to prefer the 5150 voicing....the 5150 II looks like it has the 5150 sound with the versatility of the cobra (or any other 2 gain channel amp for that matter).
btw, yes, i know the jerryP comparison site
