  • JCM800's

Hey guys. As i don't play my 7 string any more i'm thinking of getting rid of it. So i'm thinking of a trade for a JCM800 (if some one is willing to do so), but how does the JCM800 sound?

I've played through a Zakk Wylde signature head (which is basically an 800 but with 6550's) with a SD-1 and i loved the tone. Very heavy tone but can do even more when rolling the volume back a bit but how does the stock 800 sound?

I don't play in a 'death metal' band any more and the new band i'm starting won't need that modern sounding metal tone, i'm just after great tone. Although i get great tone with my ADA MP-1, a JCM800 would just be a nice addition to have in my 'tone locker' so to speak.

i own a jcm800 2210 (the split channel version). it has just enough gain for thrash metal, but then again, the single channel versions have less gain. it can get pretty brutal (although not 5150/cobra/überschall brutal), but it really shines when doing 80s metal. going straight in i can nail the savatage - edge of thorns tone down to a T. fabulous lead amp, too.
it has to be LOUD to sound decent, though. it starts sounding OK with the master around 10:00, and really opens up past noon...ever played a marshall with the master past noon?

What modern metal tone are you talking about? So many different to choose from. Anyway in general you are not going to get a new modern tone out of a JCM800. I have the 2204 and great amp, does the 80's metal thing great with a boost pedel, i have also played a 2205 and not much more gain then the 2204's, but it is there. Personaly if you want the marshall back line, get a used marshall, get yourself a JMP1 and put it in the loop, this is what the guy from Pappa Roach did on the first album, not sure if he switched it up. http://guitargeek.com/rigview/466/

I am assuming since you want to trade you are limited on funds, with that being said I would go for a 5150 used as it is a great hot rodded marshall tone that is modern.

JCM800 is a very capable amp for playing all kinds of metal if you know what pedals to use and how to EQ it. I have a 800 reissue and I also have a ZW signature head, both are great amps.

I seriously doubt you will be able to trade a 7 string guitar for a JCM800 unless your guitar is something really special. Good luck!

I have a 2203X that I push with a Keeley TS9. I also have Keeley SD-1 and a Fulltone OCD. My guitars are loaded with EMG 81/85 and EMG SPC's.

I can get great 80's/thrash/death/metal tones out of it.

I've gone thru quite a bit of amps over the past 24 months
http://www.slaytanicguitarist.com/gear.html (scroll down to past amps)
and for me the marshall sound is what I like. It can get me the 80 sounds like early Metallica, Exodus, Testament, Slayer, StormTroopers of Death and still give me enough for newer stuff like Fear Factory, Decapitated, Lamb of God.

The 2203X definately has my sound in it. I grew up back in the 80's so my sound is very Marshally.

            +1

The JCM800s have really held their value and even seem to be rising lately! I paid $499 for my 4210 in 1985, I bet I could get that for it now!

Psychodave has a great JCM800 that he modded... no need for a pedal!

universe neck? OK, modded ibanez universe

looks pretty cool...i'm not a big fan of creme colored guitars though is than an EMG pickup? kinda hard to tell from the distance....also, is that a volume/tone pot setup, or some kind of EQ or gain boosting device?

Yeah that's a EMG 707 with a volume/tone set up. I was thinking of adding a PA2 at one point but i wasn't too sure in the end.

I've always used a 100 watt strait head, you will need an overdrive/distortion pedal for metal. As you probably know an 800 has medium gain(heads will vary though). I have always liked the idea of using a pedal because if I want to change my sound I just try another pedal instead of a new amp! I got mine backfrom the shop today, unknown to me it had one power tube out, arcing in the fuse holder, bad speaker output and a bad input jack. I played a gig Sat. night and it was fine, super loud head. I bet it is even louder now! Whoo-hoo!

I had a simliar issue with mine ..it had 6550's in it and arced between the posts on the tubes..it left a carbon deposit on the socket which would allow it to keep arcing out ..I had the socket changed but Eventually I changed it to El34's anyway ..
