  • Blue Voodoo ohms question

Just got a Crate Blue Voodoo BV60H head. It's got a switch to set the ohms for either 8 or 16, one main output for a speaker cab and one for an extension cab. I'm using a Crate 8-ohm 4x12 cab with it now, but I've also got a pair of 8-ohm Jackson vertical 2x12s I may want to use from time to time. If I hook up the two 8-ohm cabs, will my impedance now be 4 ohms and not useable with this amp? Or can I just daisy chain the two Jackson cabinets from each other since they've got two jacks for input and output? Will that change the ohmage at all even though only one cab is hooked to the head and the one cab running off the other?
The extension cab output from the Blue Voodoo doesn't say how many ohms I should use. I know my old Mesa Boogie F-30 combo had one 8-ohm output for the combo speaker and two 4-ohm outputs (the two 8-ohm cabs were run off these 4-ohm outputs without a problem). I'm just a little confused.

Daisy Chaining it would be the same as running them in series, so the impedence would double, making it 16 ohms.

So. . .Run a cable from the "input" of the Cab #1 into the "out" of cab #2, and a cable from the "input" of Cab#2 into the normal speaker out on the head, with the impedence selector switched turned to 16, then rock the fuck out.

I'll post a more in-depth review soon. I got it on Monday but haven't really spent much time with it yet. It does sound pretty good with the KT66s in there so far with my Les Paul and my Charvel Star, though. I've kept the treble and presence down to tame the brightness, and the midrange control seems to act more like a contour frequency control on some Marshalls. I'll have to tweak it a little and mess with it more tomorrow.

Joe, BVs are bright indeed, if the 60 is anything like the 120. On mine I have the bass and mid dimed. I can't remember my exact settings off the top of my head, but that's a big part of it.

Zeeg, I don't have the bass dimed, but close to it. And the mids I only have about half way up, but I'll have to experiment a little more. And I just discovered one of the little orange lights behind the power tubes is not working. I guess that's just a cosmetic thing anyway to get a little more light reflecting off the mirror panel? Can they be replaced easily, do they pull right out?

I'm not sure, I've never had to replace any of mine. You're right though, it's just a cosmetic gimmick anyway.

What cab are you running it through?

Yeah. they pull right out. I worked on one last year. The red voodoo was the one I did new tubes on... Anyway. The rubber caps come off and the light bulb is under it.

If you can, put some blue lights in there, for a truely Blue Voodoo.

Thanks, guys. I'll see if I can get some blue colored lights, too. That would be a really cool touch!
