  • framus cobra vs. peavey 5150

    ok, so i did a little amp shootout thingy, mainly at moderate volumes and not in a band context (which i probably won't be able to play in anytime soon), though.
    in short words, the cobra SLAYS the 5150. remember, the 5150 used to be THE metal amp for me, it's the best amp i've owned so far. it's tweaked exactly the way i like it, with exactly the brand/type of tubes i like best etc.
    still, the cobra kills the 5150 in every respect.
    remember how i was not exactly blown away when i first got the cobra? using the notch switch is the key imho. with the notch disengaged (=normal, midrangey mode) it sounds cold, sterile, lifeless...but very tight and super honky. i always thought the notch (=scooped mids and revoiced for a more mesaish feel but way tighter) went too far as far as the scoopage goes, but i found that setting the mids and channel volume way high cures that problem (as i said, i haven't played that sound in a band context yet).
    i'll do it sound by sound:
    clean:
    anyone familiar with the 5150 knows the clean channel blows donkeys, so the cobra wins, no contest. having that said, the cobra clean is pretty good even when put up against e.g. laney or mesa.
    crunch/metal rhythm:
    the 5150 sounds very very very very very very very very fizzy and muddy when put up against a cobra. all kidding aside, it's no friggin contest. almost unfair. the cobra is the clearest, tightest amp i've EVERY played. totally unforgiving short of a VHT. seriously, i did not notice how fuzzy the 5150 really is until i've heared a really defined amp like the framus.
    on the other hand, the 5150 has more midrange, at least when compared to the notched cobra. unnotched cobra is honk city, though.....
    lead:
    the 5150 lead sounds are fine imho...somewhat uninspiring, but decent. add some delay and wah a la amott and you're set.
    the cobra lead channel has way more (usable and actual) gain than the 5150 lead channel, stays tight all the way up, with lots of definition and clarity when playing fast runs...which also means that any sloppy playing will stand out for anyone to be heared.

    both amps are somewhat dark....but i've grown to like sharp sounding amps. not harsh, but bright and cutting.

    ah yeah, one last thing...the cobra bottom end is unreal. the 5150 resonance and bass on the lead channel both set to noon is compareable to the cobra crunch channel with the bass set to noon and the deep pretty much off. go figure.

    as far as reliability goes, i've got no clue. teh 5150 is a real workhorse, and the cobra hasn't failed on me either....feels solid, too (although not even close to the 5150 in terms of weight). i'm kinda worried about overheating, though....the back is pretty much closed, and there are no venting slots above the powertubes - however, the front is open, so it's similar in design to engl amps. we'll see....

    I agree with your assessment of the 5150. I had one a few years ago (signature, not block letter) and I always thought it sounded harsh and fizzy. I could get it to sound OK at home with certain guitars, but live it was like all the good frequencies got eaten up in the mix and only the harsh, stab-you-in-the-ear high end came through.

    I've heard them work for other people, but it ain't my cup 'o tea. I think I'll stick with my Splawn.

      that's exactly my point! until i got the cobra properly dialed in i always thought the 5150 sounded GREAT. i didn't even notice all the fizz - after all my old engl was much worse in that respect it's amazing how the sheer clarity of the cobra highlighted the fizziness of the peavey

          I have 3 5150's A Signature, a series 2 and an original block letter.
          They all sound great. I don't hear the fizzyness you talk of. I do agree that they are harsh... but in a good metal way.
          I'm glad you like your Cobra. I heard they are great amps. I have never read a bad review on one.

          One other thing.. and I have mentioned this many times in the past...
          I don't think the clean channel sucks on any of my 5150's. Its a perfect clean for the genre of music the 5150 was desinged for. Its not as clean as a Fender Super Reverb and I wouldn't want to use it for a Beatles tribute band but again.. its a metal amp.

            +1 Fragle. My friend has a 5150 combo. When we jam together his sounds very fizzy and not clear like my Cobra.

              They all sound great. I don't hear the fizzyness you talk of. I do agree that they are harsh... but in a good metalway.
              john, trust me on that one. i didn't notice the fizz either, until i put it up against the notched cobra, that is. just check out some earlier posts of mine, i used to rave about the 5150 being the very best amp i've ever played so far - and i've owned my fair share of guitar amps. the cobra destroys it.
              now, i want to emphasize (again) that this is not about a band situation. i do NOT know how the cobra notched performs in a band mix....i suppose it'll sound great, but i'm not willing to bet the 5150 sounds nice in a band mix, but then again, i used to think it sounded stellar when playing alone, so go figure....

              but, believe it or not, i'm gasing for an engl savage right now. yep, i used to own a blackmore, and yep, it doesn't hold a candle against either my marshall or my 5150, let alone the cobra, but there's just something about primal fear's tone that got me hooked BAD

                    I had a similar discovery/shootout with my Laney Pro Tube (winner) and my Peavey JSX (the looser).


                    But. . .Cobras are pretty expensive though, arent they?

                      There is one thing that is unanamous regarding the 5150... engineers and sound guys love them. I have never been to a metal show that didn't have a few 5150's kicking around. They also are REALLY holding their value.
                      The only issue I have with Framus is the name. Back in the metal 80's Framus was considered a knock off. Framus guitars were super cheap and were considered in the same vein as Hohner although so were Peavey's until the 5150 came around.

                      I am still waiting for my Stiletto Deuce to come back from the shop. Waiting sucks.

                        yep, framus stuff is rather expensive....i paid 1300 euro for my cobra (mint), but that was a pretty special deal - they retail at 1700 euro

                          Unfortunately the only real-life experience I've had with Framus is a guy in a band I shared the stage with recently. He was running a Dragon (I think) in stereo into two B-52 cabs and it sounded... awful. I'm guessing it had to be the cheapo speakers in the cab or just his hands that were responsible because many people rave about the heads, and the venue has great sound. I don't know. It was quite bad. Extremely hollow and sterile sounding - almost digital sounding. I think the guitar player had to be running through some kind of multi-processor that was murdering his tone.

                          The crowd wasn't digging the band, either. After every song the singer would say to the mostly-silent room "Oh gee, thanks for the clapping. Clapping is awesome." Seriously, what did he expect? People swinging from the rafters and kissing his feet??

                            I just saw one of these in the GC in Boston last weekend. They wanted $3,999.99 for the head.
                            that was enough to steer me clear of it (don't need to start divorce proceedings over a head )
