That clip was truly beyond atrocious. The backing track didn't give him a lot to work with, but still....wow. You have to wonder if the people that posted the clip intentionally TRIED to find the absolute worst segment of the whole performance...or did the whole thing sound that bad?

What's all this got to do with the Amp? Who made it, what are the specs and when is it coming out? Go Bash Eddie in the Artists section.

LOL. I like the fact that one of you guys quoted me, and then referred to that "haters". Let's get something straight "dude": I'm no Eddie-hater. I WORSHIP the days of the great Eddie Van Halen. Sadly, I truly believe, those days are either over or numbered. Yeah, people still talk about him. Why? Cause he is a legend. It doesn't mean that he still lives UP to that legend, though. If he was still the great inovator that he once was, we'd ALL be talking about the original intention of the post: THE AMP! But, we are not. Don't turn a blind eye to what the man was, and what he is, now. Can he return to greatness? Maybe. Only HE can answer that question, with actions.
I will always be grateful for the incredible music that Eddie, Dave, Alex, and Michael gave all of us. However, I think those days are in the past. Time to live in the present.

could be a B-52 At-100 but it looks like the controls are all reversed

mine sounds a hell of alot better than that though
I can get a pretty decent VH sound out of mine

maybe a new prototype? the layout looks the same but reversed.
I know Frank Marino was working with B-52 at the beginning of the year, and Queensryche used AT-100's on Mindcrime II, it seems like B-52 may be going after some of yesterdays stars?
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

                  1. EVH looks old.

More like EVH looks BAD. This has a lot to do with him dressing like a homeless crackhead and not getting the dental work he can obviously afford. He actually looks better now than a couple of years ago, but again
he's riding himself hard and putting himself up wet.

                  2. EVH has a drinking problem.

There's no "maybe" , that's wishful thinking. NAMM 2003 proved that. He couldn't sober up for 2 hours out of a year? The Van Hagar tour also proved it, unless you just feel that he thinks it's cool to get drunk and fuck off in front of thousands of people who paid $100+ to see him as a shadow of his former self. A friend played me a live cut of Eruption from that tour and I was embarrassed for Ed. It was pathetic. And when you pay big bucks and get that crap, then it IS your business. It's bait and switch, you paid to see a guitar god and you got a drunken wino.

                  3. EVH no longer contributes to the world of music

You're right, his existing contributions are legend and if he never wrote another song he'd deserve his status. Now if he'd just stay in practice enough to play his own stuff at say 85% of its original quality and fire, I and most fans would probably be happy. He's not doing that though, and shouldn't go out on a cash grab tour when he's at 40-50%.

                  4. Other guitarists are “better” than EVH

This is not JUST subjective. EVH chose to make his career as a gunslinger - the fastest gun in the West. So others will be judged by factors such as speed, clean technique, complexity. Now Ed as a total package is pretty hard to surpass, given the great songs he wrote in classic (DLR-era) Van Halen. But as a guitarist and judging by empirical factors, yeah there are a loit of guys who've gone far beyond what Ed did technically.

But Ed didn't have to keep up with them technically. All he had to do was keep pumping out the kind of awesome songs that added a wealth to the history of rock. And playing-wise, all he had to do was keep to the standard of those first few albums. Instead, he has declined in both his playing and his writing. He got complacent, lost the fire.

                  5. EVH should disappear.

Nobody wants to see EVH disappear. We want to see him stop destroying himself with alcohol and cigarettes, and regain some of the fire he had as a kid. He can't be the 20-year-old EVH again, but he could be a healthy 51-year-old, clean, sober and playing to the best of his abilities. You can't look at him dressing like a hobo, drunk on his outings and bragging about porno music as though he were working with Scorsese and not know something's wrong!

In your personal life, when someone withdraws and becomes completely self-destructive, you don't like it, wish you could do something about it. If you can, you DO do something about it. Well, we can't do anything about Ed - even Val gave up after 20 years. But we can express our frustration.

Amen, brother, amen. Couldn't have said it better.

I think this definitely holds weight. Looks like an awful lot of knobs in a row, much like some of the B-52s. That's be my guess.

                          Evh

Yes, let's - and yours too:

                          1. EVH looks not just old, but BAD.
WTF? What is this, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy? Who made you the fashion guru? And since when do rock stars have a dress code? As I noted, at 51, EVH ain't gonna look 20, but he still looks better than most of the 50+ set. Clucking over how his teeth or shoes look is stupid.

                          2. EVH has a drinking problem - as definitively proven by 2 hours at NAMM 2003 and the last Van Hagar tour.
First, 2 hours don't prove anything. Second, I saw VH on the last tour, and EVH played great. Sammy sucked though, so I guess according to your logic, he's an alcoholic - and always has been.

                          3. 40-50%! Why that's an outrageous reduction in virtuosity! I don't know where you're getting these percentages from, but my guess would be pulling them directly from your ass. Might wanna leave 'em there in the future. Your figures are baseless. There's nothing for me to counter here.

                          4. Yes, of course it's subjective. But you're as entitled to your subjective opinion as I am, so enjoy yourself.

                          5. Something is wrong.
You know, you're probably right. IMO, something has been wrong ever since Diamond Dave left the fold. But 10,000 inane posts whining about it won't solve anything. I have no problem with people worrying about the guy; I am getting tired of threads devolving into people calling him a pathetic bum, crackhead, etc., who needs to be buried.

I wonder if part of the reason the thread drifted (aside from the fact that almost all EVH threads do) is because it's hard to imagine anybody even remotely wanting to sound like that. Therefore hardly anybody actually cares what he was playing, so there haven't been many comments.
