I have yet to see/hear somone who can touch Ed's songwriting, arranging, melody, riffing, innovative approach and vibrato skill.
Yeah, cause "Jump" was a complex musical masterpiece..........

yeah it was, its progression didn't contain 3 or 4 chords like most of us would come up, it had 6 chords in its main chord progression.

No, it wasn't..but if you had written it, you could have retired about a year after it was released. Complex does not equate with good.

E..there is but taste, popularity and bias does come into play..

I got Prototype on right now..Ed couldn't write this stuff, then or now..he's a JCFer

This is not your cup o' joe..it's not on the radio or popular, it'll never will get a chance to grow on you but your not a bit interested..your content with all the old standards ..and that's it...Randy, Ed, George, Warren, Sykes, Gary Moore and so on..all great..but there's more...but if your content and your happy...cool.

Ed could never play Nevermore in his prime, not even close..Jeff could nail anything Ed ever did..without effort..but why..why regress?

Jeff raised the bar and stirred up a lot of shit in the current metal scene..and his influence is starting to snowball, and helped put metal/shred back on the map..He'll be on the cover of these mags and maybe on the radio..but he was always this good..he don't need popularity for that..

Nevermore is all about songwriting and dynamics man..it may not be your language..but it's amazing..it's not hey look at me..that sound like someone else..

Comapring VH to Nevermore is like comparing a '78 Vette to a New Vette..

Ed came at right time..Gene Simmons prolly didn't hurt them either.. their over the top bravado..well it got my attention amoung the infinite sea of disco!!

Uli Roth's playing, feeling, vibrato, phrasing, technique and articulation was superior to Ed's back in '74..nobody gave a shit..Uli is better than ever now and broke ..he just wasn't popular..I heard Ed used to cover "Catch your train"..I'm sure that was an abortion, I never heard him play those kinds of runs....I have old live bootlegs cds..from '76/'77'78..yeesh..

Ed's style was cutting edge then..but very primitive now..

Ed (in his prime) and Loomis would look like Gary Moore and Albert Lee trading off on that still got the blues show..he'd just be toying with him..

OK..Loomis ain't your bag..sure..let's try Steve Vai..Satch or Yngwie , Tony Mac, Greg Howe Gilbert and so on..let those guys cut heads with Ed..wheeew, that won't be pretty...a total slaughter..

Yeah..Vai is all about speed he has no feel or heart at all..neither does Uli..nah..just a show offs with stripes!!...

Ed started the ball rolling but dropped it ..maybe because so many players pick up the ball and ran so far ahead of him..it made him hide in a bottle and a pack of smokes for 17 years and just said..fuggit..

Yngwie said once he went to shake Ed's hand..Ed basically ran away..hmmmmm...did you think Ed percieved him as a threat in early 1984..I bet he did..and that was the beginning of the end..when he was knocked off his throne..for good..

            No, complex doesn't equal good..

            also..

            Popularity doesn't equal good..

The true reason all these GW, Rolling stone Polls and top 100 lists suck total balls..because they don't have a clue..they only know what was spoonfed to them via the media..constant rotation..day after day..for decades..

while all the real players were woodshedding and bustin' ass underground..going totally unoticed..but I knew them..I got to know them ..and I'm glad I did..because they kill eveything the mainstream ever had to offer..

No. If I had written it, life would've gone on, as it always had, cause nobody woud've given a rat's ass about MY song. But Eddie, writes it, and "Ooh, how neato!". Give me a f#@*in' break, and don't try to tell me otherwise.

                  Valid point.

But Van Halen was both popular AND good....and they were underground once too.

I realize that music has progressed in leaps and bounds since Eddie was the undisputed king..shit there were guys around that were his contemporaries that were far more developed than Eddie in his prime...Al DiMeola, Allan Holdsworth, Uli Jon Roth, John McLaughlin to name but a few.

                  NOT THE POINT.

I am not defending Ed based strictly on his guitar skills, but more based on his impact and his overall abilities as a guitar hero and song writer.

Guy can go on, touting Mr. Van Halen as the be-all-end-all of rock guitar, and that nobody is better than he, but the fact of the matter IS, No matter HOw good you are, there is always someone, right behind you, even better. There are a sh23load of guys, in their rooms, right now, blowing Eddie's doors off, and if you don't think that to be the truth, then you are truly lost.

I am saying if you had written it and Van Halen had perfromed it...i.e if you had the publishing rights to it. I know it is a weak song..I refuse to listen to it I hate it so much...but it was a big hit.

Eddie could've farted into a coffee can, at that , point, at it would've become a hit!

That is exactly what I have been saying. Have you read my posts? There is ALWAYS someone better...always. There is someone out there right now that is probably better than Loomis, or Vai, or Yngwie. It is not guitar skills alone that set Ed apart. I don't think he is the best guitar player that ever lived, don't be a fool...I just enjoy his music very much.

Well Mike..Ed did have the biggest impact on me..prolly why I'm so pissed..

Jeff's is my new Ed now..I try to write like him..he's a bastid.

                            I used to be a VH junkie..now I'm a NM junkie..

All I ever listened to was VH so everything I tried to do sounded like that..

So ..If Jeff Loomis ever fucks up and starts losing his shit..I'll be pissed at him too..There will be hell to pay..

Here's the thing: Everything the irate defenders of Ed have said here about his writing and legacy is true. Have you guys even noticed that NO ONE HAS DISPUTED ANY OF THAT?!?!?! We are talking about the depth he has sunken to TODAY!!!

I posted a list of JCFers who I feel can smoke EVH as guitarists, in response to a statement that no one here could touch EVH - "even today". That was a truly misguided thing to claim, that "even today". It's always dangerous to play the "Fuck you, no one here can do better" card when you are at best mistaken, at worst just trying to insult anyone who doesn't share your view.

Would you rather just pat someone on the shoulder and say everything's great, as they gradually shrivel and die needlessly? Or would you rather show enough balls to say "You're fucking up! Get off your ass, clean up and get in the fucking woodshed!" Maybe if enough people are honest enough to tell Ed that he sucks TODAY instead of just teabagging him verbally, he'll get mad and clean up.

As he is now, he's going to leave Wolfie an orphan in a few years and when that's preventable, then ED is a POS for going down this road of slow death.
                              Ron is the MAN!!!!

As far as I'm concerned, everything up to 1984 should be required listening material for guitarists. Crucial stuff. The rest is, IMHO, is just waste.
