I understand the sympathetic aspect, but anyone who's dealt with someone flushing themselves down the toilet for years gets tired of it. That's why it TOOK 20 years for Val to leave, she bore the brunt for a long time. She would know better than any of us what it was like, and she bailed. I'd bet she tried everything, twice, to wise him up. Whole families go down behind this kind of crap, it's not just himself he's hurting.
As for Wolfie, well it'd be nice if he wasn't presented with the specter of his dad killing himself slowly with booze, drugs and cigs, wouldn't it? It'd be a shame if Ed kicks in his mid-50s when he could've lived a longer life, that will suck for Wolfie. Luckily he has one stable parent to rely on.
