kmanick- how is the bass response on your avatar? I was looking at the specs and noticed it is 12" deep compared to a lot of cabs that are at least 14" deep. I've been told that those extra few inches can make a difference. It does in other areas of life...

Ifraan- How is your sevenstring? Has it shown up yet?

It's closed back so the bass response is really really good. that is actually one of the reasons I went with the Greenbacks in the 4x12 cab. it was too much for what I was looking for. When I run them together (the 2x12 is 16 ohms too ) it sounds freaking brutal. I get 6X12s 4 greenbacks and 2 V'30s it sounds great!
Too Loud for my house though and my hotplate is 16 ohm so I can only run one cab at a time thru it.
I can imagine that running 2 4X12 cabs ,one greenbacks and one with V30s would be an incredible sounding rig.
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

Just snag a Marshall 1960AV (or A would still sound badass) or Mesa and be done with it!
        ...sigh..

You know DSS3 your clips sound peachy and all..that's a good thing..

I had a 5150 Cab right next to my Marshall cabs loaded with 75's and V30s..I a/b them all right here ..apparently our taste in tone is subjective, or how we both achieve that tone is..lets leave it at that..

I'm confirmed the best tone you can get from of a stock 5150 ..requires TWO things !!!

the matching cab is mandatory to get the optimum performance of that head..PERIOD!!

The 422 BBE works better with the 5150 than any amp I ever heard or tried..that list is endless..my Uber HATES the BBE..so it's not a one size fits all unit..but it fits like a glove on the Peavey..PERIOD!

The shefields are MUCH tighter and focused with less "flub" ..the 5150 cab allows you to push the gain and resonance much further without issue..celestion cabs break up and flub out..I don't like flub..to me flub is not a good thing..flub is my enemy!!

Soundclips mean NOTHING to me..Brian May played most of those Queen classics with a Pignose..so a miced soundclip means little to me..clips just put you in the ball park..or let you know you can be in that ballpark.

I'm talking from decades of hands on..in your face..knob twidlin'..face in the speakers experience..

        These days the 5150 isn't nearly good enough for me..as good as I got them..it doesn't come close the Uberschall..so what do really I care ..I don't need a 5150..I don't.

but I don't mind sharing my discoveries on getting the best tone from one..

So you got two diffrent opinions here Mine and DSS3..there ya go..I suggest to try 'em both ..and whatever you find work best..COOL!!

Just to further let you know how different our opinions are - I find the Überschall to have too-honky a midrange for what I'm doing.

                I currently own 3 5150 heads.
                EVH block letter
                Signature
                5150II

I can say with total bias that for power-death-thrash..... nothing beats the Ubershall although I do like the Savage 120 and the Herbert.

The 5150 is the working metal heads amp of choice.
I use a Vetta live but my 5150's look great in the studio and in the closet.
I also have a Stiletto at the shop getting modded and a 1987x on the way in. My next amp down the road will be either:
                Savage 120
                Ubershall
                SLO100

You gotta give it to Bill. He knows what he likes and he sticks with it. Can't say that for most of us... including me.

Look, I'm sorry dude, but do you ever not come accross as a dick?

It doesn't really matter how many Überschall's I've owned - I've played three on seperate occaisions, with different cabinets, etc. I've also tried Shiva's and Ecstasy's, and didn't like them - I'm not a fan of Bogners voicing for anything but lead playing. Why would I own one if I didn't like them? I don't buy things blindly - I always play an amp before buying it.

I use clips just as much as actually playing amps to test them out, as 90% of the playing I do is through a mic'd up amp, recording it. I could care less if an amp sounds amazing in the room - the mic'd up tone is what really counts to me.

I play what is basically a mix between Meshuggah, Devin Townsend, Nevermore, and Soilwork, essentially melodic deathmetal with lots of layers and soundscapes over technical guitarwork.

I've never been a fan of anything even remotely Marshall sounding - IIRC, you also love your JMP-1, a preamp I personally feel ruined a couple albums. We don't like the same kind of tone - leave it at that. You don't have to come up with a dickheaded rebuttal veiled in a 'difference of opinion,' especially when it's drenched in your bias for different equipment.

Wow..... after owning tons of different amps I have come to the conclusion that almost every amp is based on some form of the original high gain Marshall tone. Especially the 5150.
Mesa is the only other high gain amp manufacturer that sounds more like hot rodded Fender than hot rodded Marshall (except for the new Stiletto's and the purple stripe simul-class Mark III).
DSS3, I think you like the Marshall tone more than you think you do. Especially if you are playing 5150's.

I may like things based on the Marshall tone, but I need 6L6's, a tighter low end, less midrange, a differently voiced midrange, less chew, and a more modern voicing. The 5150 is like a Marshall on steroids and methamphetamines - it sounds nothing like an old 800 or Splawn or something.

I can agree with that. For what you are looking for the 5150 is perfect. I bet you would like the Stiletto Ace.
I am having my Stiletto Deuce modded as we speak. Its called the Hollywood mod and it tightens up the low end, slightly alters the midrange and pushes the amp towards a more modern voicing. Some players claim its a cross between a Rectifier and a modded Marshall.
Who knows... maybe it will come back sounding just like my 5150's!!

I've tried both models of the Stiletto - I HATE that amp, actually. Grainy, mucky, gross in the high end, super piercing, on both revisions.

That, and I hate EL34's... go figure. They get muddy below C#, compared to 6L6's, and I play 7 strings exclusively.

Yea, I would stay away from EL34's too with tuning that low.

I think more companies should make Fander based 6L6 amps.

The answer to that is NO!!!

It's great being me..it's a lot of laughs..I get away with it...it's what I do best!!..

                                I don't think I was being a dick here tho...I dunno..maybe I'm wrong...who cares.

Oh, about that Uber you "tried"..hey man, just like any amp..

To truly know any amp..you must get all intimate-like with it..you gotta take it home and rub your pud on it..lots of foreplay and whatnots..it's a relationship..some you work with , some you kick to the curb..

DSS3 You got your thing..I got mine..that's cool!!

These guys could try BOTH suggestions and come to their own conclusions...without our silly headbutts.

There is few that I will not debate with in c/w amps/tone..Pete, John G, Shawn Lutz and Siggy..these guys KNOW what they're talking 'bout ..I've learned, when they speak..I listen, even if my own opinion may differ from time to time...it happends.

I can't count Cleveland John..because that's my own circle...now THAT would be "bias"..we differ on occassion..but concure we have great tone for what we do..

I have five mint Marshall cabs sitting right here..why...why...now why would I be SO damned convinced on the matching 5150 cab..??????

That alone must make ya wonder..
