  • Marshall 1987x owner in the house!!

Well.. I didn't get it yet... heck... I didn't even pay for it yet! But I will shortly.
    Its around 1992-3
    1987x reissue, no effect loop.
I have always wanted a 4 input Marshall Plexi. Cranking one of these amps and recording it is tonal crunch Nirvana and its extremely difficult to copy the tone even with my Vetta.
I am getting it for several reasons.
    1. GAS
    2. It will make a great studio amp.
    3. GAS

    Anyway.... any other 1987x users??
I can't wait to jump the inputs!

I don't have one anymore, but I had an 1988 1987 Reissue,(That looks a little weird..) and it was a damn fine sounding amp.

Thanks Shawn. I paid for it today so I should be getting it soon.
Maybe after the cosmetic work I'll give Splawn a call!

from what I understand he is not modding Marshall's anymore. All his time is put in on his Splawn amps now.

No sweat. I have plenty of amp mod contacts.
I am going to re-tolex it in white with gold piping. I always wanted a white Marshall plexi.

Its on the way!!! I can't believe how stoked I am about getting this amp.
After over 30 years of playing you would think it wouldn't be that big of a deal to me. Especially considering I already have several other amps.
I need to talk my wife into letting me keep it in the living room right under the portrait of US Grant. Actually... maybe the Mesa should go under ole Sam.

It arrived today. Cabinet split the entire left hand bottom but I can fix it. It split exactly at the joint. Easy repair!!
                    How does it sound???
Exactly like I thought it would. Its loud. Stadium loud. The loudest 50 watts you could ever imagine. It is NOT useable at home unless you have a hotplate.
Turn this sucker up to 5 and the distortion is fantastic. Cold Heart Bitch comes to mind. At 5 it is LARGE club loud. I'm talking REALLY loud.
Roll down the guitar volume and it cleans up beautiful.
I love this amp. Its the one type of Marshall tone my Vetta has a tough time with.
Turn it up to 7 and she has enough gain to do early old school Priest and Kiss with no pedal.
The presence and middle controls on this amp are extremely reactive.
It has tons of bottom end with the bass on 3. Heck, it has bottom end with the bass on 0. The middle control won't give you a scoop tone but as you turn it up you can feel the notes jumping harder out of the speakers.
IMHO.. it you added the correct preamp pedal to this amp and you only needed a clean and a heavy sound you could use your guitars volume control and be in Marshall tone Nirvana. The notes are thick and it makes playing lead extremely easy. Completely opposite from the way a Mesa Rectifier reacts.
So far, I am not fond of the way it reacts to my TS9DX. I am thinking I should try a DOD 250 or YJM308. Any suggestions on preamp pedals to slam the front end of this baby a little harder? Also, what about a reverb or delay pedal in front. I am leaning towards reverb. I don't want to mess with this great pure tone too much.
1987x baby. I already knew I would love it.

I just checked the battery in my TS9DX and its shot. I replaced it and I have a ton more gain. I would still like to try another distortion pedal. Something that hits the front end even a little harder.
                      Also a hotplate.

I have a Duncan Pickup booster pedal that I am currently in love with. Always wanted one of these heads but could never find a great deal on one. Sounds like you did. Congrats.

John...slam the front with an older SD-1......

There is just something about the balls of a Marshall that I love...so simple of design but man it can give almost everything you need if you use it right

Bummer about the head case tho....Splawn can hook you up with anew one in the color of you choice for a reasonable price. I was going to re-tolex mine but the price difference wasn't that much so I just bought one.

John, I have a Home Brewed Electronics Big D pedal if you are interested. I really only need my Bad Monkey since I can get full on distortion at any volume with my amp. The Big D has 6 different diode selections, Gain and level controls, is selectable between a hard and soft clip, has a tone stack and also has a bigger button for a second boost.

If you are interested, maybe you have something to trade?

                            Mike
Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.
