  • Attenuators??

    Which one do I want?
I have a 1987X coming shortly and I will certainly need to attenuate it in the studio. It will not be used live. Just studio and at home.

I use a Hot plate and it sounds great to my ears.
the Webber units and the Koch loadbox get the best reviews.
If I really "needed" one for "real" use and not just noodling in my house I probably would've gone with the Koch Loadbox II.
Supposedly 100% transparent and won't alter yout tone at all. "Supposedly".
    big bucks too.
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

Hotplate or Weber. Remember that very much attenuation on any of the units will screw your tone up pretty good, but they do seem to record well. Just don't expect to dime a marshall and make it sound bedroom volumes like a really cranked amp - you also have to be pushing some air too. maybe an iso cab would work better, depending on how loud you can or can't go.

Hot plate. Works good for me. Just don't over attenuate. You'll be able to find a nice useable level no problem without completely sucking the tone away.
        We must!

I'm using an old Tom Scholz Powersoak. Does the trick.

Hey Pete, I just want to attenuate it down a little. When we record we usually have the amps set a little lower than stage volume. I want to record some tracks with the 1987x using its naturally dimed out distortion so I will only be attenuating it down a little.

Then put the Hotplate on -4 or -8...Will do the trick.

Shawn, do they come with adjustable impedance. I suppose if they don't I should just get a 16 ohm version.

No adjustable impedance. Ya gotta choose the one you need. Mine is a 16 ohm.

another vote for the hotplate. l've used a couple power soaks, a marshall power brake, a dr. z airbrake, a couple weber mass units, and now the hot plate. the hot plate is the best i've used. don't attenuate more than 8db and you'll be fine. btw, the hot plate kills with my splawn modded 1987x.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

A pair of Groove Tube Pr928's. If your lookin to have control over it... the GT 928PR's will cut the output by 45-50%..but its a 50w.. it'll still kick but it'll be the difference akin to running your amp at 5-6 instead of 3.

I have two of my 50w JMP's with master vol..they both have Hot Mods and the 928PR.. I have alot of control over volume and gain with no tone loss.

I have one 50w JMP stock. It's also a reissue w/o a master vol. I've used a Marshall SE100, an Altair PM-5 and sometimes..a rather obscure attenuator called the 'Boston Strangler'.
I used to use power soaks for years and still have a bunch but I think they are very unreliable after about a year of road use and I babied mine. The heat would cause the solder joints to get cold breaks. They also color the tone somewhat.

Weber is what I have been considering as my next power attenuator of choice.

                              weber mass.

I havent had a chance to do a side by side of a Weber or THD's using my amps but my initial nod goes to the Weber mass
