  • Voodoo mod for Mesa Dual Rec

I am just about to pull the trigger and get a "deluxe" mod on one of my 3-channel Dual Recs. I need the tonal improvements. Particularly take some of the honk out of CH2 and my cleans really need a tweak. I will dig any sustain improvements http://www.voodooamps.com/faqs.html #9.

I value your thoughts. Please comment.

I never tried the Voodoo modded Dual Rec, but I did try a Voodoo 5150 and that sounded way better than the stock version!!! I also own a Voodoo modded ADA MP-1 which also sounds much better than the stock ones. Trace is great to work with. A buddy of mine has a Voodoo CP-100, which sounds like my Uberschall except the mids are voiced higher like a Marshall and he also has a Voodoo V-Plex which does the classic rock thing great. Good luck.

Trace recommends the UPS "large electronics specification" packing. It's a double-box and insured for $2k it was $80 to ship it to NY from TX.

...just so you know it's a significant cost on top of the mod charge.

Still cheaper than letting the gorillas at UPS destroy your amp!!!

Alright nias, here is the review. The improvements *are* noticeable. The total (I am in TX, so shipping totalled $150 both ways) was $575. I did not get the ultra-mod with the new output tranny, just the standard and they recommended new power tubes (Ruby's) so I paid for a quad.
I am just going to spit this out ugly. It's a lot of info. I ran the testing with the head and 4X12 rectocab only.

Overall tighter bas and low mid response. Very noticeable. Strong and proud. The presence knob effects are as not as drastic now. Much deminished in sweep. Much improved CH3 and CH1. Negligible betterment in CH2 (I run that CH in raw). Better harmonic definition and definition inside chords. Some sustain improvements in that the decay is smoother as it declines. Again, it's not sustain but rather smoother decay signatures. Desired feedback is much quicker (when I jam the pickups right in the speakers). BTW, my performance guitars are USA strats (HSS).

The clean advantages are significant. If MESA would make these mods to the clean channel they wouldn't get all the critique that they do. My CH1 is now much more chimey and the honk is gone. You don't have to turn it up nearly as much to match the volume of the other channels and it doesn't break up nearly as quick when turning up. I can actually live with the CH1 tone now.

Let me just wrap up. The service and consultation was great. There was a minimum attempt to upgrade me to the ultra-mod. I ended up with a "modified by Voodoo" sticker (no logo, just text) on the front by the rec logo. They bubble wrapped the hell out of the amp and boxed it beyond. Great shipping and tracking the whole way. I love the modded dual rec and would absolutely do my other one. As a matter of fact, I almost have to.

I have the voodoo mod for the XXX with the same sticker ID...I love the way the amp responds, notable changes for every setting and quite tight even on medium setting (XXX has damping switch for tight, medium, loose).. the harmonic overtones are very noticably richer and the ability to have amp feedback to desired overtones is really responsive even at low volumes. The clean channel also is much less harsh, much more open with a 'chime'.
