  • Amp help Marshall DSL 2000 100W

Anyone got an idea. I lent my Marshall head to a friend for a gig. During the first set, everything was ok. The last song all of the sudden he had a high pitch squeal (dog whistle). This amp has 2 channels. Clean and dirty. The clean channel remained fine, but when he went to the dirty, he got no sound at all, except for the squeal.

He's very knowledgable with the equipment, but didn't know what it was. He adjust his connected pedasl, didn't help, adjusted settings on the amp, didn't help.

He changed out the head to his head, which was a Marshall JCM 800, then all was well. I don't believe the JCM 800 has 2 channels, but I may be wrong.

I don't have the head right now, but, what should I be looking for when I get it back?

    Thanks guys

Sounds like you lost a tube.

I thought that, but the head is relatively new and only used, maybe, 10 times. I'll check it when I get. So I imagine it'll be my first tube change.

It could be a shitty solder joint on a tube socket that rattled loose.
I've heard brand new, fresh out of the box Marshall's, sound like pure ass because of a crappy solder job.

I'd say it's a tube. The fact that it has low hours on it doesn't exactly mean anything. It happens, sometimes.

            Yeah... Fancy that... :ROTF:

Well, it seemed to have happened right after the last 800s rolled off the line...

Definitely sounding tube oriented and certainly could be a solder joint oriented otherwise. I had nothing but solder joint issues with my Marshall rack stuff.

If its not a preamp tube check to see if either the footswitch or the connector for the footswitch is jacked up.

yup check the tubes if not a tube,
I would look at the soldering around the tubes sometimes they shake loose

Live and learn. Always bring extra tubes to the gig.

Yeah, I wasn't there when it happened, but he said it sounded like a high dog whistle, though I've never heard a dog whistle either.
