  • Amps & their Chest Pounding, Pud Pullers...

Anyone besides myself grown tired of this CRAP yet??!!..

As you know..I had a few headbutts while sharing my personal discontent with certain amps..not anymore!!

Isn't the main purpose of any GREAT amp is to convey your very best playing to others..

I owned, played, heard many amps in the last 28 years or so..too many to remember.

It is known that I do not like Rectos and DSLs/TSLs..I bought them, and did everything in my power to make them work, I really wanted to like them..when you throw down good money for something you want to like it. I did everything with those amps..you name it, I tried it..before giving them the boot...especially the Recto. I try one on occassion and it immediately reminds me why I don't like it. So nothing much has changed since 1992 there.

Meanwhile, there is many players much better than myself playing those amps and kicking major ass, ine ever way possible!!!...Jeff Loomis, Reb Beach, Doug Aldrich, John Petrucci and so many more it'll make your head spin...who am I to say their gear blows..

I'm sure every good player here that loves good tone LOVES their rigs, and it is THE best, it prolly is..FOR YOU!

which brings me to another point.."sound clips"..sigh..

If you want to know what a amp REALLY sounds like you must stick your face in the speaker cab, while playing to know what ANY amp will truly sound like..PERIOD!!

You must remeber when listening to clips ..that is NOT you playing on them..

Clips are great to showcase YOUR tone and YOUR playing..and give others an "idea" what that amp MAY do for them. Don't ever think you going to buy a amp and sound exactly like that clip!

If we judge amps by their recordings alone..Pignose rule..Brian May wrote alot of his classics with one. Anyone that likes Nevermore knows what Andy Sneap can make a Krank sound like. If a Krank really sounded like that, I'd run out and buy two right now!!

I heard alot of "buzz" about the Uberscahall when I first came on board here almost 5 years ago. There wasn't a Uber to be found anywhere around here. So I listened to ex-JCFer Thingman's "clips" ..I like what I heard. So I hunted one down a 2.5 hours away and checked one out..Thingman
's clips did not sell me..but playing the Uber did. Although when I first got it, I compromised the tone I really liked due to that I was in a band with John..battle of the midrange..two guitarist bands know exactly what I mean.

It all depends on the player and whatever works for them. I seen a Judas Preist tribute over the weekend. Both players used 5150 full stacks..much to my dismay, what I heard was thin, fuzzy, incoherent noise. I had to waite for the vocal line to decipher what song it was. I never heard a 5150 sound so bad..two 5150s!

John opened for them with his rig, all alone, big difference. Full bodied , crisp and clear. John and I both had plenty of 5150s , they were cool..The Amotts used to smoke with them IMO!

There is many profesional players that we admire that play in bands we worship that use what most of us would consider garbage!

I had my balls battered and beaten for still loving my JMP-1. Ironically John was over playing it. It sounded so good when he played Savatage, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up as if the ghost of Criss Oliva was in the fuggin' room. 'Till this day, I NEVER heard John sound better. He liked it too, and couldn't put it down.

As far as I'm concern I have THE BEST rigs on Earth (for me), one for old school metal and one for modern, they both make me very happy and I'm not even interested investigating, I'm EXTREMELY content at this time. Unless I stumble upon a lonesone Avegenger/Engl/VHT/Framus and etc just sitting in a store beckoning for my attention.

What I'm saying here is this what works for you does not mean it must work for everyone. I don't care if you have a million dollar one-off boutique amp.. hand wired by Baby Jesus himself.

So with that said, any GREAT players here that TRULY love their rigs. Don't worry about what these chest pounding, pud pullers think..let then pound their puds 'till it falls off ..just keep shreddin' and kick their asses doing it. If they give you shit..tell 'em Bill Z Bub said they're an asshole!!..

One man's garbage is another man's treasure..

It's all what you do with it..

    Respectfully,

    Bill Z Bub

Now Shuddap and play yer guitars!

Indeed, each to his own. What Eddie Van Halen uses might make you cream, but if I used it, you would cry. Laughing!

Like you say, get out and try different amps, like women, you will KNOW when you have found The One. (Till then, just be a slag like me and use loads, he he)
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

      I nearly broke her back

          I likes mines..and I don't care who don'ts!

I don't need "approval" to love my shit..just my own!!

I seen Zeegs turn BLUE as his BV because of people ripping on it..

They wouldn't be ripping on him if he was Marty Freidman..they'd be swingin' from his sack!!

          That is truth!!

          Here's a perfect example..

Shawn Drover came by here a few years ago..before he was in Megadeth with his bro Glen..and he's the "drummer"..and people were swingin' from his sack..including me..

          what's his bro use..he's uses a VHT..No..umm..Uber..um..No..hmmm Soldano..Splawn???

          Oh, I remember now..a 8200 Valvestate..

Anyone pick up the new Eidolon with the Pagans Mind singer..

Yeah, tell Glen Drover his amp SUCKS, if he ever comes here..I wanna fuggin' see that!!!!!!!! :ROTF:

I'm increasingly frustrated with my Marshall's weak-ass gain, even though I get compliments on it. I don't think it has the balls for my tastes nowadays (Extreme black & death).

              I think I need a 5150, right?

Amen, brother. I hate the gear-snob mentallity. I play what I play, because it was in my price range AND it works for me. I've never adhered to ANY brand, and never discounted others. Try it, before you judge it. It just may surprise you. I've saved tons of money, doing just that, and I reccomend it to all of you, too.

You can't go wrong with a 5150 in my book Ron..they brought plenty of good years to me and John..

but like I said , it's all a matter of who's playing..like those two dudes in the JP tribute band..they had two full stack and I never heard a 5150 sound that bad..

I strongly urge to hunt one down..go to any Peavey deal and play a 6505, it's the same exact thing, beside cosmetics..play it..see how you get along with it.

If you like it, check they Bay or maybe someone here may be selling one really resonable..

I had quite a few 5150s, I really like them, but the lead tone always seemed a bit "dead" to me, not too bad..but The Amotts never sounded better with theirs..they kick my ass with the Uberschall..

Ron, you have a JCM800 combo am I correct..??

If you like that amp but want to kick it in the ass, there's things you could do..outboard stuff for example, different preamp tubes..both.

There is plenty of Amp dudes here that could advise some things to try..

                      I can change a tube..umm that's about it..I don't know how or screw with biasing amps..I play 'em, I don't fix 'em.

You got plenty of guys here for that Pete, Siggy, JG, John, Charvelguy,etc.. I saw Annah screwing around with biasing on another thread..

You had for a long time..I'm asuming you tried things with it already.

Yup, a 4210 that I've had since 1985. In 1990 I had it modded with an extra 12AX7. Couple years ago the 6550s crapped out so I replaced 'em with KT88s. Around then I also started running the signal through a Soldano 4x12 cab loaded w/ Vintage 30s. I've also tried pushing it with an ART Xtreme distortion pedal, and a Boss 7 band EQ. None of it is doing what I want.
