is it a lack of gain that's the problem ron? lack of saturation? or a lack of particular frequencies? tightness/looseness?

You've heard it, right, Eric? You even said you preferred certain aspects of my amp to those of the ENGL Fireball you used to have (!).

I'm not as knowledgeable as you are regarding terms such as saturation and tightness...so...you tell me!

Around then I also started running the signal through a Soldano 4x12 cab loaded w/ Vintage 30s. I've also tried pushing it with an ART Xtreme distortion pedal, and a Boss 7 band EQ. None of it is doing what I want.
Well Ron, shit..you did more than I thought..

Keep it..you had it this long for a reason..1985..wow.

Maybe someone could assist you..talk to Pete, Siggy, JG..they mess with that stuff..Pete builds and mods amps..

I would definitely try a 5150 if I were you and go from there..they are a great bang for the buck!!

They used to be really cheap before guitar became popular again..my cuz had a mint half stack for 400 bucks that collected dust..That wouldn't be the case now..

You know what..I really love my JMP-1, check into a nice used one..I think you'd like it would too..it's my favorite Marshall tone I ever had..couple that with a cool poweramp..a Peavey 120/120 is a good choice..Pete bought one not long ago..pretty cheap. I think he sold it already.

I'm one of few with a Marshall 9200 w/5881s , that's what they came with when they first came out..I really love it..I heard all my buds with their newer EL34 versions..it's definitely not for me.

I think you'd like it if you played it..since you already had the 6550 and KT88s .and like Marshall!

John Loves his Vetta, and they are supposed to be pretty damn bad ass if you don't mind learning how to use them..you're a bright dude..that may be an option.

But I'm thinkin' 5150 for you..simple, easy, effective, resonable!

yeah, I thought it was a bit less 'stiff' sounding than the fireball, a bit more natural or something (not a very scientific word to use... )

saturation generally comes hand-in-hand with gain (but not always), it definetely adds to an amps thickness. (for reference, bill's uber is a pretty saturated sounding amp, most vhts aren't very saturated, even though they're high gain)

tightness is basically how fast the amp responds. if you play a really precise palm muted passage, does the amp 'lag' at all? or seem a bit 'soft'?

I'm so bad at desribing tone stuff

basically, what does the marshall lack? what sounds do you want that it won't do?

You saw my Vetta post listing my settings. My basic tone is based around a dialed down Ubershall. The Ubershall patch on the Vetta is one of its best if set up correctly. I use it with a 4 x 12 Treadplate cab sim.

Yeah I think I'd quickly tire of tweakin' all those knobs and stuff. I wanna plug & play! I missed out on Somuzsoth's $400 5150 last week

Oh well...there'll be more. Will start looking for 'em in shops so I can try em out 1st (also 6505s which I knew are exactly the same). Also just picked up the new Peavey catalog.

Yes I love 6L6..I wished my Uber were 6L6 instead of EL34..

                          KT88 would be even better!!

my new Tung-Sol 12AX7's came in..they are supposed to have much less midrange "honk" ..so it may work very well in that amp!!

                          I'm hoping!!

                          wish me luck!!

:ROTF: Along the lines of the original post, I don't like 5881's or 6550's. I've had a shitload of Marshalls, JCM 900s (SL-X, Dual Reverb and MKIII), JCM 800's (Single and two channel, 50 and 100 watt), Silver Jubilees, 30th anniversary's (LE and LM) JMP's (Master and Non Master Volume) and Marshall power amps. I've had both versions, 6550 or 5881, and EL34's of almost all of them, and if it says Marshall on it I want EL34's or I'm converting it. Just a simple matter of taste preference. I do prefer 6550's over 5881's though.

I think Bill's right, 5150 is pretty much the swedish metal sound

                                I am such the opposite..but hey..man..ya know..man..(my "dude" impression)..

Tone is extremely subjective..it has to sound and feel just right to the player..

otherwise it won't sound good to the listener..I think!!

The listener, even a schooled one won't tell nor care..if you are playing with EL34s or 6L6..if it sounds killer!!
