Tung-Sol 12ax7..are they worth it??

I remember the night Mike put that Tung-sol in V1. We just sort of stared at each other for a couple of minutes. The slightly buzzy top end that cause people to complain about Rectos was completely gone. I ordered mine the next day.

And got a damn dud. It was too tall, and when I put the tube cover on, it cracked the stem at the top of the tube.

I'm still waiting for the replacement to come in. Musician's Fiend says it got lost in transit. Dammit.

Dude, that sucks ass..they seem to make a big difference in a lot of amps..Hell I may have kept my Recto years ago if I knew about these...No matter what I did, I could never get rid of that recto "buzz"..that's what I hear when I play them..

They sound fine when I hear other people play them..that's just the way it is I guess..

Man, I was totally amazed. That tube is magic in V1. You have to bump the gain up a notch to compensate for it, but it's not like I dime the gain on my amp. I know why you do on your Bogner, though: I play through Siggy's Uber every time I'm over there, and damn does that shit sound great like that!

Bill: Have you by chance tried these tubes (or any other tubes for that matter) in your JMP-1 preamp? It's been a long time since I popped my JMP-1 open, but I believe it has Sovtek tubes in there (probably the original tubes and my preamp is an early 90s model).

Your right..I popped mine open last year to replace a Sovtek..kind of a pain in the ass..but No , I havn't..but that's a good idea..the only thing is I think those Sovteks and JJ's give you that Marshall mid that ALOT of players do like..so I don't know..

That's what Dan from the Tube store advised me..he said that alot of Marshall guys think the Tung Sols are "too dark" and prer the JJ's..but when I told him about my personal complaint of TOO MUCH mids with my Uber..he strongly suggested these..he heard that before with guys who wanted a draker, more bassy and scooped mid tone..

Good Idea tho..I like the way the JMP-1 sounds tho..because it really give you that very authentic Marshall tone like classic VH..and that's what I always loved about it..

i am ordering a set for my powerball monday under 200 bucks is always worth a shot...I figure what the hell.the stock tubes in the engl sucked so I replace them all with JJ's and am very happy with the change.but let's see what happens with the engl PB/tung-sol preamp experiment

Well John Comprix of Beyond Fear w/ Ripper Owens is coming over tomorrow night to check out a Uberschall in the flesh..

He is currently endorsed by Engl and is not satisfied with the Powerball / Fireball..he wants more "brutality"..

He took home a VHT "Deliverance" to try out at rehearsal tonight..neither of us heard that yet..so I'm waiting for his verdict on that one..

He's a pretty lucky fucker..he gets to use any free gear he wants...must be nice..

Bogner just offered him an endorsement deal..so he wants to give this a shot..I think he'll be quite happy myself..

John Comprix was just here of Ripper Owen's Beyond Fear..he'll be in Europe for over a month, leaving next week..Italy , Germany..Budapest..ect ..NICE!!!

John plays very agressive, much like I do..he's completely blown away by the Uberschall, he stated "he just heard the most brutal amp he's ever heard in his life..period"..I did explain to him about the Tung Sols..I kinda emulated what It sounded like before I installed them..I backed off the bass a tad and pushed the mids up a bit..to give him an idea..he don't give a shit..

He's calling Bogner tomorrow and ordering a couple for the tour, with four cabs..I guess he's getting a super deal and is going to hook me up with a Uberkab..so that's fuggin' sweet!!

He also wants to record my band in his new studio and let me use his Beyond Fear drummer..he totally offered..he really loves the stuff.. and would like to be involved..

so I'm pretty jazzed right now..

He was vert thankful..for letting him have fun with it..he jammed with Vinny and was rockin' out pretty damn good!!

He was sweep pickin' and shit..dude's been takin' lessons..

When I asked him about the VHT deliverance.."he bluntly stated "Fuck the Deliverance"..well OK then..

we play Death metal / Thrash riffs guys..nothing else..so this is the kind of tone we go for these days..

He's got a 5150..and says it's a joke compared to this thing..I had a few..so I know, they're good amps..but they're are no where near this..

I'm happy!!
