  • Playing Guitar thru a big stereo system, can anything be damaged?

Ok, So I just bought this adapter to let me play guitar thru my big stereo system (we're talking 2 big ass speakers, and a receiver, and stuff). I plugged my guitar into it (while using my Distortion pedal) and it sounds AMAZING, there's no buzz or extra added distortion. My parents think I'm going to blow their 1500$ stereo with my guitar. Is it possible, will i damage it with my guitar?? (scientific answers are appreciated)

    These are the specs:
    300watts power handling
    20Hz - 22Khz frequency responce
    nominal impendance 8 Ohms
    and they're liquid cooled
    Thanks

    Thanks

What kind of adapter is it?
Are you running the source from a line level signal or headphone output?

I occasionaly run my GNX-1 through the home stereo (500 watt Sony reciever) via the headphone output of the GNX-1 to an open Aux input on my reciever (1/4 to RCA adapter)... works great and I have not caused any damage at all.

This is going to sound bad but wtf...
#1. Why are you playing through a $1500.00 liquid cooled home stereo system?
#2. If your parents can afford such a high end system see if they can spring for a little $150.00 modeling combo for you.

#3. Your parents are correct. Lay off their home stereo system bud.

Mow a few lawns and go buy your own amp.

You have a pretty good chance of blowing the tweeters if you do it much or very loudly. Get them to get you a Spider II 112 or a Vox ADVT30 combo, both are pretty nice for under $200, much cheaper than repairing your parents' speakers.

Did it, years ago, when I was a kid. Found out that I could get distortion out of the old man's stereo, if I plugged into his tape deck, and pegged the recording levels (Didn't have an amp, yet). Problem was, I bumped the volume or something, and blew out one of his speaker towers. DOH!

I did that when I borrowed my first electric guitar... I connected to the preamp of our record player which was connected to the stereo and got some distortion this way.

Then my dad said that would cause damage, so I played through my own video recorder/TV setup.

Well, soon after I bought my first electric guitar and amp. Much better.

There are no 'immediate danger' risks, but you 'must' use a distortion pedal or a compressor. Otherwise, the narrow band from a staright guitar signal can blow your parent's tweaters if you play too agressively, or too loudly, causing a clip, blowing the tweeters.

No, you won't damage your guitar, but think about the question you asked about damaging your guitar. Ergo; If I borrow your dad's car without asking when I'm drunk and smash it into a tree, will the blood stains come out of my shirt?

The safest way is to run a POD, or a V-Amp2 into the stereo, which is meant for full range speakers, not a guitar cainet.

I would imagine that you already have an amp, as you have a distortion pedal. Return the dual RCA to 1/4" adapter to Radio Shack. Then watch the first scene from 'Back to the Future' and see what happens when Marty fools with equipment not made for the guitar.

Lol. Actually, I think I remember the smoke, in MY case, coming out of the back of the receiver! You could easily smell it. Fortunately, I was home, alone, and played stupid when the parental figures got home. A year or two later, once DAD had a chance to cool, I fessed up.
