  • 5150 + 6505

I found the 6505 to sound NOTHING like the 5150 did. I've tried out both through the same cab and the 6505 sounded fuzzy, lacked balls and had little definition. Whilst the 5150 sounded punchy etc, just how every one describes it.

Does anyone else share the same opinion as me?

There must have been something wrong with it. Either that... or the tubes may have been changed on either. They sound very similar.

Yeah, they're identical. I've taken them side by side, swapped the tubes between the two, and played em through the same cabinet - there is NO difference.

There must be quite a few F'ed up ones around either that or they all must sound pretty bad. The one I played thur at a local music store sounded like dog crap! I was about to question if there was something wrong with the amp but I was trying out a guitar not the amp so I pluged into something else.

I never heard a 5150 that sounded like dog crap. Even the beat to shit ones with old as crap tubes still sounded pretty darn good.

John you should have been at that Judas Prest tribute show I saw..

I was standing there thinking..how in the fuck can you get that amp to sound that shitty..

Both players had full stacks..I had to waite for the vocals to hear what song they were playing..it was a wall of thin, sizzly, incoherent, fuzzy noise..even my wife said "WTF??!!"..

                I couldn't get a 5150 to sound like that if I tried!!

                They're great amps..

Come to mention it im not liking the tone from my 6505 as late. Infact i have been using a boost pedal all the time very rare i use the amps distortion these days. Dont get me wrong i'd love to just use the Amp on its own but at the moment it does nothing for me. Its not that old really bout a month old do you guys think it would be worth getting it modded & the bias adjusted to be a little hotter as i know they come out quite cold from the factory. All im using at the moment is a MXR KFK 10 Band EQ in the loop & a Maxon 808 in front. I had a 5150 bout 3 years ago & i cant remember it sounding as cold as the 6506 ? The 5150 had the perfect testament sound (first strike still deadly album) Problem here in the UK i dont really know any decent amp repairers/Modders which doesnt help & the postage to the US would be outragous.

I think Jerry has posted on this board a couple times before; he's the master of the 5150!

well the 6505 is sounding bad tonight i cant seem to get it how i want it. Its weird how different distortion pedals sound with different amps i tried my metal zone with the 6505 tonight & its shit but through my old DSL 100 its instant cannibal corpse. Im seriously concidering gettig rid of the 6505 doesnt seem to be working out good. They are a little over rated to be honest. The thing thats pissing me off is that they shouldnt need to be modded or altered to get a workable tone it should just work straight out the box but thats like a lot of things of today they dont do what they say on the box.Im not to keen in using overdrive/distortion pedal in front of the amp kinda defeats the object of the reason the amp was bought for. But the amps distortion even with EQ to tighten it up sounds like arse.

What cab do you have (and what speakers does it have)? What settings are you using? How old are the tubes? What about the sound is bothering you?

Hey Inearthed the cab im using is a 1936 loaded with V30's. A GE7 Eq in the loop & a Maxon OD808 in front of the amp. I have my settings for the rhythm channel as follows :Rhythm pre gain is on 4-5, Low is on 5-6, Mid 0-3, High is on 6-8 power amp settings is RES 4-5 PRES 5-7 i use the bright button to boost the highs a little. When switched off it makes the bass to much to handle i never use the crunch button sounds horrible. The Amp is only a month old so im asuming so are the tubes. Also just a bit more info im using a Kelly loaded with an 81 & 85 with upraded CTS pots, switches etc. I tried the 85 in the bridge at 1st but the bass was to much. I think its an impossible task to get the 6505 to do old school death metal late 80's early 90's Death,Obituary,etc... the 6505 seems to be for todays metal In Flames etc. Its probably just me trying to get to much out the amp. I have thought about trying other tubes but ive never heard any 2 people suggest the same configuration so it gets confusing. Oh nearly forgot the most important thing. The thing about the sound that really bothers me is the amp at times sounds like a chainsaw when the bright button is on & when depressed theres way to much bass i cant seem to get it to balance out.
