or that carvin you were looking at. mesa stuff is nice but it gets pricey. the peavey rack amps are great for the money. the carvin is apparently decent....sometimes you can find a good deal on mesa power amps, but they really aren't the be-all-end-all of rack power amps. to me that would be VHT.

I agree with Mark about the VHT, but you're NOT gonna find a cheaper one. I've seen a couple of the 295's go for less than $500 on the Bay. Also, in the case of the 295, I'd put it up against ANY poweramp behind an MP1.

50 watts is plenty in a club.. more than deafening. Peavey classic 60/60 has more than enough headroom IMO...but the Carvin is a good choice too.
I own both.. the Carvin is more compact, but I find I like using the Peavey more often... as the Carvin is El34 and the Peavey 6L6.

I agree with you, and I don't agree. Both amps you've listed are fine pieces of equipment, but I wouldn't recommend any 50 watt amp behind an MP1 for club gigs. Although they can be loud enough, tone will undoubtebly suffer especially for cleans and the MP1 being an older unit can tend to get noisey/feedbacky pushing the master harder thru a lower wattage tube amp.

I'm so glad this question was asked today because I'm trying to convince someone why I should be the one buying that persons MP-1 and not someone else. As if wearing a Testament shirt isn't e
              enough haha
I'll probably get it though. Keep the posts coming!
              Thanks

Hey...PM inbound...check out the ADA Microtube 200 poweramps....100 watts per channel stereo or 200 watts bridged in a 1U space.

                LOUD!!

I've seen a few of those, but don't know too much about them. My other guitarist said that they overheat without a whole ventilation rack space both above and beneath the unit.

                      Hmmm....never heard of them overheating....

But, I never gigged with mine either...just practice room/studio....but, I also did allow ventillation as a "good idea"...

I never had a problem with mine....

another affordable direction for "clean" headroom is to go with a PA amp. the downside is they are solid state or mosfet, but if you NEED the clean headroom they can be used effectively.

another route to go if going tube is a neccessity and you are on a budget, is look at the peavey or carvin amps and then grab some REALLY efficient, high wattage speakers that will keep your sound tight.

for instance, i used the peavey classic 50/50 (then later a rivera hammer 120) with my MP-1. i never had a problem with "tightness" because i use EVM12L or JBL M121 speakers in my cabs. the speaker rarely colors the tone at all and NEVER gave any extra distortion.

i would run the peavey power amp wide open and used the volumes on the ADA to determine loudness.

like i said, it was killer except for the clean channel, which i never liked anyway.

that's exactly what i did with my 50/50 and MP-1. It really opened the sound more but just low volume. The 50/50 is probably the best 'bang for buck' power amp around

I just spoke with my old guitar teacher who has one of these and he said he used it extensively gigging. Said it overheated once so he moved it into a 5 space from a 3 with his MP1 And power conditioner and never had the problem again.

Burn, not to ruffle anyone's feathers, but for tone's sake......don't do this. PA amps are tone suckers. While alone it will sound good, with a whole band (depending on the type of music you're playing..for any type of metal, this is bad) the sound will get lost and muffled in the mix. Even pumping the mids won't help bring it out.

I use mine with a Mesa 2:90 and it sounds amazing. Make sure you add a BBE unit to the mix.

The clean channel is a trick to dial in and balance with the gain for sure. What is a 5 on the gain master will need like.. 8 on the clean master setting just for the clean channel to compete volume wise. (that is mentioned as an example. I don't run 8 on the clean master and expect it to be still clean-,my settings are much lower) I don't have any problems with noise or feedback so far on the clean settings in club gigs with a Peavey Classic 60/60. Its been awhile since I used this rack but I used to use it gigging for a few years. never had any issue with headroom... but I do agree.. if you have the bucks to plunk down on a higher wattage tube power amp....you might as well get the concert setup out of the way.
