FX units at volume

Hey everyone, im wanting to know how floor based multi fx units go at high volume?
Does the sound get lost in the mix or does it stand out?
Whats the tone like a higher volume?
When i say high volume, im talking gig volume, just deciding to get a VOX Tonelab SE or not and wont have the chance to crank before i buy.

What are you going to be using for an amp? Anyway, keep in mind I'm a plug and play guy and not much of a tweaker, but I've tried my PODxt Live into the effects return of my Single Rectifier, into the input of a Mesa 20/20 poweramp, and into the effects return of a Crate Powerblock. Believe it or not, it sounded best through the powerblock. Through tube amps, it souded squashed (?!), and didn't sound as "big" as a head, which doesn't really make sense... I would think the tube amp would be the best power source.

Having said that, the Powerblock/XT Live through my Mesa 2x12 was easily loud enough to keep up with a full band. I never put it through my 4x12, but I'm sure it would be even better.

I'd actually love to try a Tonelab SE through a real amp. I wonder if it would sound better than the XTL, which I'm not a huge fan of.

With the XTL into a real cab/amp, you have to remember to turn off the cabinet sims.

I used a Digitech TSR12 for FX through a Fender RocPro1000 at gigs and rehearsal (when I had a band), and it was easily loud enough. I also used an ADA MP-1 for a preamp in a live setting through the Fender's power amp and it was loud enough.
Lastly, I also used a Digitech GSP21 Legend through the power section of a Peavey Bandit 112 live and the singer had a hard time being heard with his "plug-n-play" RocPro1000/4x12 cab rig.

It's close, but you have to take into account speaker breakup/cab dynamics. Something I'm still trying to tweak on my Vetta. Even though 2.5 addressed the Fletcher-Munson issue, it will still sound differently turned up to band practice volumes.

Best bet, tweak it at the volume you will be using it... which can be hard if you're like me and live in a small house with a wife and rugrat.
